Here's a look back at the last week in Hewitt-Trussville High School sports.
SOFTBALL
The Hewitt-Trussville softball team hosted the Class 7A, Area 6 tournament last week. The Huskies opened the tournament Tuesday with an 11-0 win over Oak Mountain. Olivia Faggard, Hannah Dorsett, Sara Phillips and Gracie Reeves all hit home runs in the contest for the Huskies. Faggard knocked in 4 runs, while Phillips and Reeves each drove in a pair. Phillips threw 5 hitless innings in the circle, striking out 9 batters.
Hewitt-Trussville fell to Spain Park 7-5 in nine innings Wednesday evening, as Maggie Daniel hit a 3-run, walk-off homer to lift the Jags to the win, which secured them a spot at the regional tournament and in the area tournament final. Daniel hit a pair of homers in the game. Ella Ussery hit the 2-run, game-tying double for the Jags in the seventh inning as well. Ussery went 4 innings, allowing only an unearned run, while Ella Reed threw 5 innings for Spain Park.
For Hewitt-Trussville, Chaney Peters hit a homer and drove in 2 runs in the contest. Reeves was 2-for-4 with a key RBI double. Zaylen Tucker went 3-for-5 and stole a couple bases. Phillips went 5 2/3 innings in relief, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits with 9 strikeouts.
Hewitt-Trussville went on a run Thursday, winning three games to capture the Area 6 tournament title.
The Huskies survived Chelsea first, winning 10-6. AhKeela Honeycutt, Lexie Kelly, Reeves and Sarah Beth Golden all hit home runs in the game, combining to drive in 7 of the team’s runs. Peters also drove in a couple with a multi-hit game. For Chelsea, Katie Hopson and Sydney Carroll homered, with Kathryn Bryars driving in a run as well.
Hewitt then moved on to defeat Spain Park twice, first with a 5-2 win. Kelly hit another homer, adding that alongside a double and 3 RBIs. Peters hit a solo homer as well. Faggard was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Tucker threw the complete game, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits, with 8 strikeouts. Ella Reed threw the complete game for Spain Park as well, giving up 5 runs on 6 hits.
The Huskies broke out the bats one more time in the final game, winning 11-5. Faggard had a huge game, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a home run and 4 RBIs. Dorsett went 3-for-3 with a triple. Peters finished 2-for-4 with a double and 3 RBIs, Honeycutt knocked in a pair of runs, and Tucker had an RBI and scored 3 runs. Phillips went the distance, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits with 8 strikeouts. Daniel hit a homer and drove in 2, while Ussery also knocked in a pair of runs.
Hewitt-Trussville will play in the Class 7A East Regional this Thursday in Albertville.
TRACK AND FIELD
The Hewitt-Trussville boys and girls outdoor track and field teams finished third at the Class 7A state meet last weekend. Check back with Cahaba Sun later this week for a recap of the meet.
GOLF
The Hewitt-Trussville girls golf team won the Class 7A, Section 3 tournament last Monday at Vestavia Hills Country Club. Hewitt-Trussville shot a 261, with Spain Park shooting a team score of 264.
Kiersten Riggins, Aubrey Payne and Morgan Hopper all shot 87 for the Huskies, which qualify for the sub-state tournament next week.
