The Hewitt-Trussville High School softball team won the Gulf Coast Classic on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, at Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
Here's a look back at the last week in Hewitt-Trussville High School sports.
BASEBALL
The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team traveled south last week, playing a couple games in Gulf Shores last Monday. The Huskies split a doubleheader that day, falling to Hueytown 6-2 but beating Normal (Illinois) 14-4. Christian Helmers got the win on the mound in the second game, striking out 7 hitters. Grayson Pope hit a home run and a triple and knocked in a pair of runs for the Huskies. Brett Moseley hit a double and drove in 3 runs. Kurt Kizer notched a pair of hits, including a triple, and knocked in a pair of runs. Carson Wideman tallied 3 hits, with a double and a triple, and 3 RBIs. TJ Chappell notched a pair of hits and Rob Wright knocked in a pair of runs.
Hewitt played again Wednesday, defeating Napersville 5-1. Ryan Davis earned the win, going 6 innings and striking out 6. Will Argo earned the save, as he struck out a pair in an inning. Pope registered a pair of hits and 2 RBIs, while Moseley, Kizer and Wideman knocked in runs as well.
Hewitt-Trussville wrapped up its trip with a 14-2 win over Bradford. Dylan Lewkutz got the win on the mound. Pope had 2 more hits and 2 more RBIs for the Huskies, while Jack Ollis tallied 3 hits and scored 3 runs. Drew Ollis and Wideman each registered 2 RBIs, while Carson Zeitvogel had 2 hits and 3 RBIs. Wright hit a double and drove in a run.
SOFTBALL
The Hewitt-Trussville softball team played in the Gulf Coast Classic last week in Gulf Shores. On Monday, the Huskies won all three pool games they played. In the first game, Hewitt took care of Forrest 7-0. Gracie Reeves led the team with 3 runs batted in, while Chaney Peters went 2-for-2 with a couple RBIs. Sara Phillips was strong in the circle, throwing 4 scoreless innings and allowing only 1 hit. She struck out 6 batters as well.
In their second game, the Huskies beat Enterprise 3-2. Hannah Dorsett led the Huskies offense, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, stealing a couple bases as well. Zaylen Tucker threw 4 innings, surrendering a couple of unearned runs on 2 hits, striking out 5 batters.
The Huskies wrapped up the day with a 3-1 win over Wilson. Reeves was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI to spark the offense. Kate Hicks threw 4 2/3 innings, allowing only an unearned run on 2 hits with 7 strikeouts.
Hewitt-Trussville played a game Tuesday, beating Hokes Bluff 2-1, before rain washed out the rest of the day. Kinley Poe threw 3 innings, allowing a run on 3 hits, while Phillips threw the final 2 innings in hitless fashion, striking out 5 batters.
The Huskies made a run Wednesday to win the tournament. They began the day with a 10-1 win over Houston Academy, last season’s Class 3A state champion. Dorsett cranked her third home run of the season, going 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs in the game. Reeves, Olivia Faggard and Phillips all knocked in a pair of runs, with Faggard also notching 3 hits. Hicks threw 4 innings, with the run she allowed counted as unearned.
Hewitt-Trussville rallied to knock off Hoover 5-3 in the quarterfinals, as Chaney Peter’s 3-run home run put her team ahead for good. Phillips threw 5 innings, striking out 6 and giving up 3 unearned runs. Hoover’s Bella Foran drove in a pair of runs for the Bucs. In the semis, the Huskies beat Vestavia Hills 5-1. Peters had 3 more RBIs, and Tucker allowed a single run in 5 innings of work. Vestavia’s Elizabeth Yother pitched 2 scoreless innings as well.
The Huskies then blasted Springville 12-0 in the final to claim the tournament title for the second straight year. Faggard, Tucker, Reeves and Phillips each tallied 2 RBIs in the contest, while Dorsett had a pair of hits and drove in a run as well. Phillips was nearly unhittable, as she allowed 2 hits and struck out 9 over 4 scoreless innings.
SOCCER
The Hewitt-Trussville girls soccer team won two of three matches last weekend in Foley at the Southern Coast Cup. The Huskies beat Foley 1-0 and shut out McGill-Toolen 2-0 on Friday, before falling to The Westminster Schools out of Georgia 8-1 on Saturday.
