Here's a look back at the last week in Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school sports.
BASKETBALL
The Clay-Chalkville boys and girls basketball teams began Class 6A, Area 12 tournament play last Monday, with both Cougars teams earning wins.
The Lady Cougars blew past Pinson Valley 62-24 to advance to the tournament final. In the contest, Kamoriah Gaines had 18 points to lead the way, with Brooklyn Phillips adding 10 points.
The Clay boys had to survive a struggle against Mortimer Jordan, hanging on to win 42-39. Devon McKinnon, Tiawan Hardy Jr. and Da’Von Cheatham all contributed 11 points. McKinnon added 6 rebounds and 2 steals, Hardy had 4 steals and Cheatham finished with 5 rebounds. Mortimer Jordan’s Tanner Chandler posted a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Hewitt-Trussville’s girls began play in the Class 7A, Area 6 tournament Tuesday, beating Spain Park 61-19 to advance to the tournament final.
The other local teams were in action Wednesday. Clay-Chalkville’s girls posted a big 55-51 win over Mortimer Jordan, as the Lady Cougars upset the No. 2 team in 6A.
Pinson Valley knocked off Clay-Chalkville’s boys 62-50 in the Area 12 tournament final. For the Indians, Caleb White went for 23 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds and a pair of steals. Terry Coner had 22 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals. Clyde Walters had 10 rebounds to go along with 5 points, 2 assists, 2 steals and a block. For the Cougars, McKinnon led the way with 11 points and 4 rebounds. Victor Odiari had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Cordae Averette finished with 9 points and 10 boards.
Hewitt-Trussville’s boys saw their season end in a 46-36 loss in the opening round of the 7A, Area 6 tournament. Legion Gaston led the Huskies with 13 points in the game, while Reid Stodghill scored 7 points and Braxton Brown and Emeka Anwah each added 6 points. Zach Gray led the Jags with 18 points.
Hewitt’s girls pulled out a 46-37 win over Chelsea on Thursday in the area tournament final. Jordan Hunter posted an impressive stat line in the win, going for 19 points, 6 rebounds, 6 steals and 6 assists. Sara Phillips added 10 points and 4 rebounds. Madi Moore and Sophia Brown scored 12 points each for Chelsea.
The local teams get the playoffs started this week.
Clay-Chalkville’s girls host Cullman on Monday at 6 p.m. in the Class 6A sub-regional round. Clay’s boys head to Cullman and Pinson’s boys host Hartselle on Tuesday. Hewitt-Trussville’s girls face Huntsville at noon Wednesday at Jacksonville State University, in the Northeast Regional tournament.
WRESTLING
The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team finished fourth at the Class 7A North Super Section tournament over the weekend, qualifying nine wrestlers for the state tournament this weekend in Huntsville.
Hunter Jones went 3-0 and won the 195-pound weight class. Clark Box advanced to the 106-pound finals and placed second. Bradley Hastings advanced to the finals in the 120-pound weight class. Deuce Alston won a pair of matches and finished fourth in the 170-pound weight class. Chris Hawkins won two matches and finished fourth in the 220-pound division. Zack Chatman was fourth at 285 pounds and booked a trip to state. Alec Nelson won three matches and qualified at 126 pounds. Charlie Buttiker won his first two matches and made state at 160 pounds. Cameron Cantwell had three wins to qualify in the 182 weight class.

SOCCER
The Hewitt-Trussville boys soccer team knocked off Leeds 5-1 last Tuesday.
Hewitt-Trussville’s girls played to a 1-1 draw with Homewood on Thursday.
