Here's a look back at the last week in Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school sports.
INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
The Hewitt-Trussville boys and girls indoor track and field teams came up a few points short of a runner-up trophy last Saturday at the Class 7A state meet, held at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Hoover swept the boys and girls titles in dominant fashion, as the boys more than doubled runner-up Vestavia’s score, while the girls won by more than 30 points as well. Hewitt’s girls finished third with 63 points, behind Chelsea’s 81 points. Hewitt’s boys were fourth, just a half point behind Huntsville and 9.5 points behind Vestavia Hills.
Tori Mack was victorious in the 60-meter hurdles, running the race in 8.92 seconds to earn top spot on the podium. Michael Igbinoghene was an individual champion as well, as won the long jump crown by reaching 22 feet, 8.75 inches.
The boys 4x200-meter relay team of Hudson Bates, Colin Wadsworth, Malachi Johnson and Manny Cazeau was victorious as well, running it in 1:29.
Also reaching the podium for the girls were Brianna Beckham (third in 60), Madisyn Hawkins (second in shot put) and the 4x200 relay team of Beckham, Mack, Libby Armstrong and Emmie Goodell.
Beckham (fourth in 400), Avery Cahoon (seventh in 800 and sixth in 1,600), Kinley Harris (seventh in 1,600), Catherine Asbury (fifth in high jump), Haley Melton (eighth in long jump and fourth in triple jump), Haven White (fourth in pole vault), Sarah Johnson (eighth in pole vault) and the 4x800 relay of Cahoon, Sophie Bryant, Callie Armstrong and Sophia Knox (sixth) earned points for the Huskies girls as well.
Earning additional points for the boys team were Igbinoghene (fifth in 60 and fifth in triple jump), Nathan Thomas (sixth in 60), Cazeau (sixth in 60 hurdles), Tristan Teer (eighth in 1,600 and sixth in 3,200), Will Owens (seventh in high jump), Daniel James (fourth in pole vault), Shaw Helfrich (eighth in pole vault), the 4x400 team of Cazeau, Daniel Hickman, Hudson Bates and Tyrone Reese (fourth) and the 4x800 team of Rush Lachina, Wes Ellison, Jacob Mullinax and Teer (seventh).
Hailey Tolbert, Jamal Hobbs, Jadon Loving, Jayda Hammonds, Jaliyah Edwards, Skyler Carrillo and DJ Carter also competed for the Huskies.
BASKETBALL
The Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley basketball teams opened the last week of regular season play last Tuesday evening.
Hewitt-Trussville’s boys suffered a 61-34 loss to Mountain Brook.
Clay-Chalkville earned a split with Oak Mountain. The Lady Cougars knocked off Oak Mountain 65-41. Cheyenne Pearson led the team with 21 points. Kamoriah Gaines had 13 points and Kameron Sanders added 12 points.
Clay’s boys fought hard but fell to the Eagles 72-64. Devon McKinnon led the Cougars with 23 points and 4 rebounds. KJ Kirk finished with 10 points and 3 rebounds, while Erin Callens also had 10 points with 4 assists. Matt Heiberger led Oak Mountain with 36 points.
Pinson Valley’s boys beat Woodlawn 67-36 to remain unbeaten. Clyde Walters was the star of the show on the night, posting a double-double and finishing with 22 points, 11 rebounds and a pair of assists, blocks and rebounds. Terry Coner had 18 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Raymon McCants added 13 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists.
Pinson Valley picked up another impressive win Thursday night, beating Huffman 83-63. Caleb White had a huge game, posting 31 points, 3 assists and a pair of rebounds. Coner went for 22 points, 5 rebounds and a pair of assists. Walters posted another double-double, finishing with a line of 11 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks. McCants and Amari Bowens each scored 8 points.
Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley wrapped up their regular seasons Friday night. The Cougars traveled to Fort Payne and emerged with wins in the boys and girls games. Gaines led the Lady Cougars to a 58-40 win, as she posted 19 points. Sanders had 18 points and Pearson finished with 10 points.
Clay’s boys grabbed a 79-51 win. McKinnon had another strong effort, going for 22 points and 4 rebounds. Tiawan Hardy Jr. finished with 11 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Cordae Averette went for 8 points, 3 rebounds and 3 blocks, and Victor Odiari had 8 points and 3 rebounds.
Pinson Valley’s boys wrapped up a perfect regular season with a 63-44 win over Center Point, as the Indians went to 26-0 on the year. Bowens had 18 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and a pair of steals. Walters finished with 17 points, 7 rebounds and a pair of assists and steals. Chauncey Thirkill had a double-double as well with 10 points and 10 boards.
Hewitt-Trussville concluded the regular season on Saturday with home games against Central-Phenix City. The Lady Huskies picked up a 44-34 win, led by a strong defensive effort. Jordan Hunter led the offense, finishing the day with 21 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals. Audre Benson posted a double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 4 steals in the game. The Hewitt boys suffered a 62-49 loss.
The postseason begins this week, with the local teams playing in area tournaments.
Hewitt-Trussville plays in Class 7A, Area 6. The Lady Huskies will host the tournament, taking on Spain Park on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The final is set for Thursday at 6 p.m. The Hewitt boys will play Spain Park at Oak Mountain, on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. That final is set for Friday at 7 p.m.
Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley will be playing in the Class 6A, Area 12 tournaments. Pinson Valley’s boys will get the winner between Clay-Chalkville and Mortimer Jordan (Monday at 7:30 p.m.) in the final on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Clay and Pinson’s girls square off Monday at 5:30 p.m., with the winner playing Mortimer Jordan on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the final.
WRESTLING
The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team split a tri-match last Tuesday. The Huskies beat Helena 75-6, but fell to McAdory 42-33.
The Huskies dominated Clay-Chalkville 66-14 on Thursday. Clark Box (106 pounds), Riley Hulwi (113), Bradley Hastings (120), Alec Nelson (126), Ian Hodgin (132), Max Medero (152), Delvecchio Alston (170), Cameron Cantwell (182), Hunter Jones (195), Chris Hawkins (220) and Zack Chatman (285) all won for the team.
SOCCER
The Hewitt-Trussville boys soccer team had a solid start to the season last weekend at the Lakeshore Shootout. The Huskies beat Austin 2-1 on Friday, then turned around and beat Hoover 1-0 later Friday evening.
On Saturday, the Huskies fell to Vestavia Hills 1-0.
