Casey Bates will be recognized for her painting at the Congressional Art Competition reception on June 20.
Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in each congressional district.
Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.
Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries. Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. The winning works are displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol.
Casey Bates, a student at Hewitt-Trussville High School, who also earned first place in her district and second place in her category at the statewide Visual Art Achievement Program competition earlier this year, now has the honor of representing the district again under Congressman Gary Palmer with a new painting.
As the Sixth Congressional District winner, she was invited to the Congressional Art Competition reception, which will be held in Washington, D.C., at the U.S. Capitol on June 20.
