The Trussville City Council honored the Trussville Rotary Daybreak Club in recognition of World Polio Day.
Rotary International is a global network of neighbors, friends, leaders and problem-solvers who unite and take action to create lasting change in communities across the globe.
In 1985, Rotary launched PolioPlus, and in 1988 helped establish the Global Polio Eradication Initiative with other world organizations to immunize the children of the world against polio. These were just a couple of the statements included in a proclamation made by the Trussville City Council honoring the Trussville Rotary Daybreak Club in recognition of World Polio Day on October 24.
Many of the Club’s members were on hand for the announcement of the proclamation on Tuesday, October 11.
According to the RI website, Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease.
Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort.
Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
