The Stone Gateway Project will identify Trussville’s historic district.
The Cahaba Homestead Heritage Foundation has exceeded its monetary goal to construct stone gateways identifying the city of Trussville’s historic district.
The goal of $50,000 was recently made possible by 200 brick donations from families and businesses, and by the following key contributors:
- The Cahaba Homestead Heritage Foundation
- The Reich Family
- The Bell Family
- The City of Trussville
- Joe Knight and the Jefferson County Commission
- Danny Garrett and the Jefferson County Community Service Fund (grant application in progress)
- Shay Shelnutt and the Alabama Department of Tourism grant for Heritage Days 2023 in support of the Stone Gateways
The Stone Gateway Project will identify Trussville’s historic district with entrances reading: “Cahaba Homestead Village – National Register of Historic Places – Est. 1936-1938.” The Cahaba Project is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as “Cahaba Homestead Village.” Historic resources and structures that contribute to this national listing include most of the original 287 homes, the historic Mall, the stone gazebo entrance, Rock Bridge, Heritage Hall/ACTA Theatre, and the historic Hewitt High School, which now serves as Cahaba Elementary School. The Cahaba Project was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.
Trimm Landscapes began construction of the three stone gateways in early October. Bellco Inc. will install flagpoles at each gateway and a bronze plaque. The gateway designs are based on the original sandstone entrance at the Parkway Drive and Highway 11 intersection. The three gateway locations include:
- Corner of Chalkville Road and Poplar Street
- Corner of Parkway Drive and Poplar Street
- Chalkville Road along Magnolia Mall between Hewitt Street and Magnolia Court
Brick pavers will be placed at the stone gateways on the corner of Parkway Drive and Poplar Street, and at Magnolia Mall.
A dedication ceremony for the gateways is planned for January 2024. More information will be available soon. For those interested in donating personalized bricks to be placed at the gateways, there will be an opportunity to do so in 2024.
The mission of the Cahaba Homestead Heritage Foundation, Inc., is to support through education, outreach and civic involvement such things that promote, perpetuate and enhance the value of the community as a historic district designated on the National Register of Historic Places.
