NORTHPORT – Fast and frequent scoring continued to be on display by Hewitt-Trussville High School Friday night, as the Huskies shut out a Class 7A, Region 3 opponent for the second-straight week with a 49-0 win at Tuscaloosa County. The Huskies dominated on defense, allowing only 121 yards to the Wildcats, while the HTHS offense accumulated 454 yards.
It's the sixth time this season the Huskies have scored more than 40 points in a game, and the third-straight week to shut out an opponent 42-0 in the first half.
"It's obviously impressive," said HTHS Coach Josh Floyd. "It's something we've been trying to focus on. Most of the year we haven't done a great job starting games. The defense has done a pretty good job, but offense has been able to take care of business the last few weeks. It doesn't matter who we're playing, we want to come out here and play a great game."
Tuscaloosa County had its only sustained drive to start the game before turning the ball over on downs at the Hewitt 33. The Huskies then marched 64 yards over the next 3:10 of action to take a 7-0 lead on a Noah Dobbins 9-yard touchdown run. It was the only score of the first quarter.
Hewitt cranked up the dial with a 35-point second quarter, tying the Class 7A, Region 3 record for points scored in a single quarter that the Huskies set in 2016 against Oak Mountain.
Deuce Alston punched in a 1-yard touchdown early in the second quarter to cap a 2:24 drive. From there the scoring drives kept getting shorter. An 8-yard touchdown pass to Will Phillips made it 21-0 to cap a six-play drive. On the first play of the next drive, Dobbins flashed his speed and broke a 55-yard touchdown run down the Huskies' sideline.
A 2-yard CJ Davis touchdown and 3-yard Alston touchdown capped the next two short scoring drives to send the game into the half up 42-0.
"I thought we started a little slow in the first quarter, but late first quarter we started picking it up, and I'm proud of the way our guys played the game," Floyd said. "Noah did a good job running the football. He made a couple of reads and made some big plays. That kind of got us going. I felt we were a little lackadaisical early on. They were eating some clock. Give our defense some credit. To have a shutout like that again is a big deal."
Dobbins finished the night with 83 yards and two touchdowns on four carries and 111 yards on 9-of-13 passing, plus a touchdown – all in the first half.
Steven Fisher opened the second half with a 70-yard touchdown sprint. He had 81 yards on the night, while Davis rushed for 68 yards on six carries.
With Zach Benedict under center, Hewitt used up the clock in the third quarter before attempting a 26-yard field goal with 1:42 in the quarter that was blocked. Benedict was 3-of-4 passing for 21 yards. The only Husky punt of the game was late in the fourth quarter.
Hewitt closed the regular season out-scoring opponents 384-87 through its 10 games, an average win margin of 29.7 points.
With an off week ahead, Hewitt (8-2, 5-2) will prepare to travel to Baker (7-2) in Mobile on Nov. 8 for the first round of the Class 7A playoffs.
