TRUSSVILLE – Thompson High School lost its top ranking in Class 7A with its loss last week to Clay-Chalkville, arguably the best team in Alabama regardless of classification.
The Warriors played like a team determined to reclaim its spot at the top Friday night. Thompson came to Trussville and blew Hewitt-Trussville away in a 40-14 win to take command of Region 3.
“They were more physical at times,” Hewitt-Trussville head coach Josh Floyd said following the game. “It felt like we gave them a lot of easy ones in the first half and you can’t make those mistakes in the first half and beat a team like that.”
Hewitt-Trussville (5-2, 3-1 in region) simply made too many mistakes to have any chance of pulling out a big win. Thompson (5-1, 4-0) seemingly moved the ball at will much of the night and made very few mistakes, not being forced to punt all game.
Even with Thompson jumping out to a 24-7 lead, Hewitt-Trussville put together a strong drive toward the end of the first half, one that could have altered the momentum of the game. But the Huskies fumbled on the 1-yard line and were left facing a 17-point deficit at the halftime break.
“It’s a big part,” Floyd said of the importance of that sequence. “You [could have] cut it to 24-14. You can’t get into the red zone and not score. When you play these guys, you’ve got to score touchdowns. We just didn’t get it done.”
Floyd pointed to his team’s lack of execution on offense and inability to tackle consistently on defense as key issues.
He said, “That’s what’s most disappointing. Give them credit for outplaying us tonight, no doubt about it. I’m not trying to take anything away from them, but a lot of issues were internal. I hate it. I’m disappointed for our fans. I’m sorry to our fans.”
Thompson came out of the gates hot, scoring a pair of touchdowns in the opening quarter by running the ball. AJ Green scored on a 1-yard run and Michael Dujon got in on a 6-yard push to make it 14-0.
The Warriors’ passing attack took it from there. Freshman Trent Seaborn connected with Kolby Hearn for three touchdowns, on connections of 80, 33 and 26 yards. Seaborn finished the night 22-of-29 for 357 yards, with Hearn piling up 172 of those yards on just 5 catches.
Deuce Oliver had 8 grabs for 70 yards, Pryce Lewis caught 4 passes for 37 yards and Dujon had 23 receiving yards as well. Green was Thompson’s leading rusher, going for 75 yards on 14 carries.
Hewitt-Trussville got on the board early in the second quarter, as Peyton Floyd broke the plane on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line. But the next time the Huskies got down close, they fumbled the exchange and Thompson recovered.
Jaqson Melton scored on a 4-yard pass from Floyd in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 27-14 at the time. Seaborn and Hearn connected twice in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
John McGuire impressed for Thompson as well, kicking field goals of 47 and 48 yards.
Peyton Floyd finished 27-of-39 passing for 252 yards, also rushing for 41 yards. Melton had 23 rushing yards in addition to his receiving score. Jadon Loving was Floyd’s top target, finishing with 7 catches for 94 yards. Dylan Cope had 8 receptions for 31 yards, Jacob Serena caught 4 passes for 51 yards and Donovan Price finished with 4 grabs for 45 yards.
Thompson now becomes the heavy favorite to earn the Region 3 title, requiring two losses over the final three region games for anyone to challenge for that crown.
Hewitt-Trussville has no time to dwell on the sour taste left by Friday’s contest, as the Huskies travel to Vestavia Hills next week for a game that will likely determine which team gets a home playoff game in the first round.
“There’s still a lot to play for, it’s not like the season’s over,” Josh Floyd said. “We’ve just got to bounce back and we’ve got to go win a big game. It’s hard to win at Vestavia. You’ve got to learn from this. You don’t want it to be for nothing."
Thompson heads to Oak Mountain next week to continue to region play.
