ALABASTER – Knocking off perennial power Thompson High School at Warrior Stadium is a tall task.
Not many have been able to do it over the last eight years, but Hewitt-Trussville had a chance Friday night, before falling 15-10 in a Class 7A, Region 3 contest.
Just over midway through the fourth quarter, the Huskies drove inside the Thompson 10-yard line and elected to kick a field goal. Colton Argo’s 23-yard boot cut the deficit to 15-10.
“We almost decided to go ahead and go for it,” Hewitt-Trussville head coach Josh Floyd said following the game. “There wasn’t a whole lot of time, but our defense had been playing so well. Our decision, right or wrong, was let’s go get the points, let’s get a stop then go win the game.”
Thompson muffed the ensuing kickoff, but converted a pair of third downs to keep the drive alive and drain nearly the rest of the clock out.
“It almost worked out perfectly,” Floyd said.
The loss drops Hewitt-Trussville to 5-2 and 2-2 in the region, in a three-way tie for third with Vestavia Hills and Prattville. Thompson is 5-2 overall but 4-0 in the region.
Hewitt-Trussville’s offense was clicking at the outset, as the Huskies put together a 15-play drive to start the game, but got no points due to a couple negative plays and a missed field goal.
“We had a great first drive,” Floyd said. “We just had a couple plays we didn’t execute the way we’re supposed to.”
Hewitt turned the ball over on its next drive, setting Thompson up at the 2-yard line. But the Huskies defense bowed up, producing a goal-line stand to keep Thompson off the board.
But Thompson did get on the board two plays later, tackling Hewitt quarterback Noah Dobbins in the end zone for a safety to make it 2-0.
Hewitt’s defense had its back against the wall again in the first half, as Thompson got inside the 10 but missed a field goal.
Thompson took an 8-0 halftime lead after finishing off a 12-play drive on a Michael Dujon 1-yard touchdown run.
The Warriors went ahead 15-0 in the third quarter, as five-star defensive back recruit Anquon Fegans showed off his offensive skills by grabbing a 27-yard touchdown pass from Trent Seaborn. Fegans had 95 receiving yards on four catches on the night.
The Huskies responded with an 80-yard drive, scoring on Dobbins’ 13-yard pass to tight end Jackson Martin to make it 15-7.
Deuce Alston and CJ Davis never quite broke free for a huge gain, but the duo combined to have persistent success behind their offensive line. Alston finished the night with 58 yards on 14 carries, while Davis had nine carries for 35 yards.
“I was really proud of our O-line for battling tonight,” Floyd said. “These guys are way bigger than us, but they fought their tails off. We had a lot of guys make plays in tough situations.”
Dobbins finished the night 19-of-31 passing for 138 yards. Will Phillips completed a 29-yard pass on the drive that led to the Huskies’ field goal.
Dylan Cope and Jacob Serena each caught seven passes. Cope had 77 yards and Serena finished with 42 yards. Serena left the game in the second half with an injury and was seen on crutches after the game.
Seaborn was 16-of-26 for 210 yards on the night. RJ Evans was the Warriors’ leading rusher, finishing with 66 yards on 19 carries.
Darion Moseley had three catches for 37 yards, Jaden Kelly-Campbell finished with 47 yards on a pair of grabs and Trey Knight had five catches for 24 yards.
Both teams remain in Region 3 action next week. Hewitt-Trussville heads back home to host Prattville, while Thompson travels to Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa.
“We just got to keep the team together,” Floyd said. “The season’s not over. It’s one game. That’s the thing about our region. You’ve got to respond the very next week.”
