TRUSSVILLE – The homecoming dance will just be the afterparty.
Hewitt-Trussville made a lot of noise early and danced its way to a 49-7 homecoming win over Prattville in a key Class 7A, Region 3 game at Hewitt-Trussville Stadium on Friday.
With the win, the Huskies move to 3-2 in the region and 6-2 overall. Prattville falls to 2-3 in the region and 4-3 overall. Vestavia Hills also moved to 3-2 in the region with a win at Oak Mountain.
The Huskies scored touchdowns on six of their seven first-half possessions en route to a 42-0 halftime advantage. Quarterback Noah Dobbins was responsible for four of them, rushing for a 34-yard score for the game’s first points, then connecting with Dylan Cope, Jackson Martin, and Will Phillips on completions of 28, 24, and 14 yards, respectively. Deuce Alston also raced for a 53-yard touchdown and Parker Floyd completed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jake Lowery in the first half.
“They were challenging us at receiver,” said Huskies head coach Josh Floyd. “They were playing some man coverage and getting in our face, so I thought our guys did a good job of taking advantage of that. We had some receivers make some plays."
Prattville got its only points late in the fourth quarter when Landon Smith scored on a 1-yard run, a 97-yard drive in which Smith accounted for 25 rushing yards and Triston Blackmon amassed the other 72 yards. Blackmon finished with 21 carries for 135 yards, while Smith toted the ball 10 times for 54 yards, one touchdown, and a lost fumble to the Huskies’ Daniel Harvey.
Hewitt-Trussville’s DJ Hall returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown to give the Huskies a 49-7 lead.
For Prattville, quarterback Gavin Rigdon struggled to a 3-of-10 night for nine yards and an interception to Ethan Ridley. The Lions totaled just 10 passing yards and 259 total yards.
“Our defense continues to play just really, really good football,” Floyd said. “I thought tonight was better complementary football in all three phases. We haven’t done that too many times this year, I feel like. I’m proud of that.”
For Hewitt-Trussville, Dobbins finished 11-of-15 for 222 yards and three touchdowns through the air, while rushing five times for 58 yards and a score, all in the first half.
“I think Noah is getting better every week,” Floyd said. “I think he’s making plays, he protects the ball well for us, and I’m pleased with where he’s at. He made a few plays with his feet again. That’s the kind of guy he is. He’s the kind of guy that can make plays when the play breaks down. He just keeps getting better and better.”
Alston rushed six times for 85 yards and a touchdown. Freshman CJ Davis totaled 87 yards, 66 of which came on two receptions. Cope led the Huskies with four receptions for 104 yards and a touchdown. The Huskies totaled 423 total yards in the game, 405 of which came in the first half.
Hewitt-Trussville stays at Hewitt-Trussville Stadium next Friday to host Oak Mountain in a Class 7A, Region 3 game.
“I think there’s going to be a lot on the line next week,” Floyd said. “I don’t know exactly what the playoff scenarios are, but I know we’ll be close to being able to get a spot. We’d be one step closer. There will be a lot on the line next week, and they’re playing for their lives, too, right now so we’ve got to bounce back and move on to next week.”
