Hewitt-Trussville warms up in a game against Hewitt-Trussville and JAG at Husky Field on Friday, Aug. 23, 2024.
TRUSSVILLE – The theme was there for the taking, and Hewitt-Trussville High School took full advantage.
On one end of Husky Parkway, for months bulldozers have cleared land for a new housing development. On the opposite end, more bulldozers have pushed away mounds of dirt for a future softball complex. Students on Friday night dressed in hard hats and neon construction vests.
On Friday night, near the middle of those two projects, the Huskies decided to do some bulldozing of their own. Ten different Hewitt-Trussville runners tallied for more than 200 yards on the ground in a dominant 50-6 win over visiting J.A.G. High School.
“I thought our pace was good offensively at times,” said Hewitt-Trussville head football coach Josh Floyd. “Defense did a really good job most of the night. I feel like we played pretty well on defense most of the game. Some mistakes. Too many penalties. Some pre-snap penalties we’ve got to do a better job at."
The start to the game was an inauspicious one for Hewitt-Trussville (1-0). J.A.G.’s TyAnthony Elmore returned the opening kickoff 91 yards, giving the Jags a 6-0 lead after a missed extra point attempt. Hewitt-Trussville then scored touchdowns on its next three possessions – a 17-yard score from quarterback Noah Dobbin to James Kelly, a 4-yard run by C.J. Davis, and a 23-yard touchdown from Parker Floyd to Jacob Serena. The Huskies also gained two points on a safety in the first quarter.
The Huskies found the end zone three more times in the second quarter, first on a 2-yard run by Floyd, next on a 2-yard pass from Dobbins to Serena, and lastly on a 5-yard fade from Dobbins to Dylan Cope.
The lone score of the second half came when running back Steven Fisher plunged in from 2 yards out, finishing a six-play, 70-yard drive in which the senior ran four times for all 59 of his team-leading rushing yards.
For the Huskies, Dobbins completed 11-of-15 passes for 94 yards and three scores. Davis, a freshman, finished with 44 yards, a touchdown, and lost fumble on eight carries. Kelly rushed for 34 yards and edged backfield mate Deuce Alston by a yard. Serena finished with a team-high 42 receiving yard and two touchdowns on five receptions. Cope had four catches for 32 yards.
J.A.G. quarterback JaMichael Harris finished 2-of-8 for five yards, all to Elmore. Running back Donovan Caldwell ran 11 times for 34 yards.
Hewitt-Trussville hosts Gadsden City, which impressively knocked off Muscle Shoals on Thursday, next week before Class 7A, Region 3 play begins the following Friday.
“That was an impressive win Gadsden had last night,” Floyd said. “Gadsden was a quarterfinal playoff team last year. They were 9-4 and we had a dogfight at their place with them last year. Any time us and Gadsden get together it’s been some great matchups, and I think it’ll be a really good challenge for us. We’re a young team, so hopefully we’re going to see some growth each week.”
Cougars begin Stuart Floyd era with win
Clay-Chalkville began its defense of the Class 6A state title with a 28-7 win over Hueytown on Friday, opening the Stuart Floyd era with a win.
New quarterback Aaron Frye and receiver Jabari Staples were in sync, connecting five times for 132 yards and three touchdowns. They hit two of those touchdowns in the first quarter to stake the Cougars to a 14-0 lead.
Hueytown cut the lead in half before the halftime break, but the Cougars scored twice more in the second half to pull away. Joshua Woods scored a rushing touchdown before Staples went 75 yards for the final score.
Clay will play Ramsay at Legion Field on Thursday night.
