TRUSSVILLE -- Hewitt-Trussville High School bounced back from a tough loss to Hoover last week, winning a wild one over Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 37-16 on Friday night in Class 7A, Region 3 action.
Led by senior quarterback Noah Dobbins, the Huskies offense needed big plays from the passing and running game to put away a pesky Patriots squad that just wouldn’t go away. The Huskies put up 469 yards of total offense, 229 passing yards, and 240 rushing yards, en route to a 21-point win.
However, it was the defense that came up big in the second half, forcing a pair of key turnovers in the fourth quarter after struggling to stop the Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa offense in the first two quarters.
“I think we just executed better in the second half. The defense got off the field on third down, and offensively we had some explosive plays in the pass game. That was a big part of it,” Hewitt-Trussville head coach Josh Floyd said.
“We didn’t play our best game on defense, but I thought we played tough and physical on the defensive line in the second half. I think that was the difference in the game.”
Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa drew first blood on an impressive 10-play, 96-yard drive capped off by a 19-yard run by Jacobi Harris. The Patriots took an early 6-0 lead following a failed two-point conversion attempt.
However, Hewitt-Trussville answered on its next play, a 61-yard gallop by Michael Igbinoghene, taking the lead 7-6. Four plays later, Hillcrest regained the lead, 13-7, on a big play of its own, a 54-yard bomb from Bryson Kimbrough to Jordan Chambers-Smith.
The Huskies volleyed with another quick touchdown, this time a 50-yard scamper by Deuce Allston.
Both defenses settled down, with only five points scored in the second quarter. The Patriots spotted the Huskies two points after a snap sailed over the punter’s head and into the end zone for a safety.
Hillcrest kicker Hudson Hall converted a short field goal as time expired in the first half to tie the game at 16-16.
The second half belonged to Hewitt-Trussville, as the Huskies scored two touchdowns in the third quarter. First, Dobbins connected with Dylan Cope on a 43-yard strike, then CJ Davis scored on an 11-yard run.
The defense forced two key turnovers in the 4th quarter, a fumble recovery by Denarrius Crawford on and an interception with five minutes to play.
Dobbins’ 10-yard touchdown run put the game away for good.
Dobbins completed 11-of-17 passes with a touchdown. He said he believes he learned some important lessons about perseverance, leading the Huskies offense to an important region win despite some adversity.
“I think I developed pretty good tonight, throwing two picks and just putting that away and coming back out and going one play at a time and executing,” Dobbins said.
Alston led the Huskies in rushing, gaining 102 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown. James Kelly led all receivers with 138 yards on six catches, while Cope had 76 yards on four catches and a touchdown.
Hewitt-Trussville, (4-1 overall, 2-1 in region) will travel to Pinson Valley next Friday.
