They call them "husky fast" for a reason. Hewitt-Trussville unleashed a hurry-up offense that left Gadsden City's talented defense gasping for breath en route to a dominant 42-14 victory.
The Huskies, who improved to 2-0 on the season, went hurry up through much of the game, scoring on several drives of 50 yards or longer, including a 94-yard drive that took less than 2 minutes.
Hewitt-Trussville Coach Josh Floyd said wearing the Titans' defense down early was a major part of the gameplan.
“I felt we played well at time offensively once we got our pace going,” Floyd said. “We stressed it all week that we wanted to try to wear them down. They’re really good on defense. They’ve got a lot of team speed and have some tough defensive linemen that are tough to block. We were hoping the heat would be an advantage for us tonight.”
After a quick 3-and-out to start the game, Gadsden City got on the board first scoring on a 20-yard pass from quarterback Kai Franklin to receiver Robert Ransaw on a drive that ate almost 7 minutes off the clock.
Hewitt-Trussville settled down on its second drive under quarterback Noah Dobbins, leading the Huskies on a 6-play, 65-yard drive capped off by an 11-yard touchdown run by junior running back James Kelly, his first of three scores on the night.
The first quarter ended with the score tied 7-7. On the second play of the second quarter, Kelly scored his second touchdown on a 16-yard pass from Dobbins, capturing Hewitt-Trussville’s first lead of the game, 14-7.
The play of the game came later in the second quarter on a key special-teams play by Will Phillips. After a kick from punter Christopher Thomas sailed over his head, Phillips picked the ball up on his own 12-yard line and briefly fumbled and recovered on what initially appeared a terrible decision. However, after working his way outside containment, Phillps received several key blocks and sprinted down the left sideline in front of the hometown stands for an exciting 88-yard punt return for a touchdown, essentially icing the game for the Huskies.
“When I saw it go over my head I was tempted to not pick it up but I peaked out and I saw there was only one person and I knew I could beat that one person,” Phillips said. As soon as I was able to break that first tackle after I grabbed the ball, I thought ‘I’m taking it back.’" My defense did an amazing job blocking for me.”
Floyd said the blocking on offense and special teams was a highlight of the game, not only from the offensive line but from the backs and receivers as well.
“I thought our line did a really good job most of the night and we especially had some blocks downfield that were big,” Floyd said. “Our perimeter blocking was better at receiver than in our first game. I was proud of our receivers for blocking well.”
Hewitt-Trussville went into the locker room with a 21-7 lead over Gadsden City. The Titans made it interesting on their first drive of the third quarter, marching 85 yards on six plays to pull within 7. However, the Huskies countered with a blistering 94-yard, 4-play, 1:30 drive, capped off by an 11-yard score by freshman CJ Davis.
The Huskies added finished off the scoring with a 19-yard catch by Kelly late in the third quarter, and Dobbins found senior receiver Jacob Serena on a 9-yard pass early in the fourth.
Hewitt-Trussville amassed 364 total yards of offense -- 145 yards passing, 219 yards rushing. Dobbins completed 9 of his 10 passes for all 145 yards and 3 touchdowns. Kelly was the Huskies’ leading rusher gaining 75 yards on 10 carries, followed by Dobbins with 58 yards on 7 carries.
The Huskies’ leading receiver was Serena with 4 catches for 78 yards, followed by Kelly with 3 catches for 43 yards.
Hewitt-Trussville will travel to Vestavia Hills for a key region matchup with the Vestavia Hills Rebels on Friday, September 6.
