ALABASTER -- It came down to a personal foul, a missed extra point, and a sigh of relief as Clay-Chalkville High School took a 14-13 win over Thompson in overtime Friday night.
With the score tied 7-7 at the end of regulation, Clay-Chalkville got the ball for the first possession of overtime. On third-and-goal from the 7-yard line, the Cougars ran a reverse trick play that appeared to backfire until wide receiver Marlon Compton, running from defenders in the backfield, tossed the ball to a diving Jabari Staples for the score. The extra point by Joseph Del-Toro put the Cougars up 14-7.
On the ensuing Thompson possession, the Cougars defense held strong, forcing a fourth down from the 5-yard line. However, Thompson quarterback Trent Seaborn lobbed a prayer to the back corner of the end zone, connecting with Angel Jones for a touchdown. However, during the celebration, the Warriors were penalized 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct, forcing the extra point to be attempted from farther distance. John Alan McGuire’s 28-yard kick was wide right, giving the win to the Cougars.
Clay-Chalkville head coach Stuart Floyd said the win over Class 7A powerhouse Thompson is a testament to the Cougars’ resiliency, especially after almost letting the opportunity slip away.
“A lot of that’s on me. We have to do better, especially on the 1-yard line. They’re really good in the red zone and hard to score on anyway,” Floyd said. “I felt like if we punch one or two of those in, this game is out of reach because our defense played lights out tonight.”
Despite the close score and closer call, the Cougars were strong for three quarters, stuffing the high-flying Warriors offense in the process, but just couldn’t seem to put the game away early in the final period.
The Cougars took the game’s opening drive 80 yards, eating more than eight minutes off the clock, capped off by a 3-yard score by Joshua Woods. With rain drenching the teams, the defenses dominated the remainder of the first half, as the Cougars went into the locker room with a 7-0 lead.
Midway through the third quarter, the Cougars recovered a Thompson fumble on the Warriors’ 47-yard line. Led by junior quarterback Aaron Frye, the Cougars relied on tandem running backs Woods and Aaron Osley, driving the ball to the 1-yard line as the quarter came to an end.
However, the Cougars were unable to punch it in, turning the ball over on downs and putting it in the hands of Seaborn. The Warriors’ quarterback led an improbable 99-yard drive, most of the yardage gained on a 66-yard strike over the middle to receiver Darion Mosely. The Warriors scored on the next play to tie the game 7-7.
After another stalled Cougar drive, Thompson had one more shot to win the game. However, McGuire’s field goal attempt was wide right, sending the game into overtime, where the Cougars would come up big.
“The word ‘moxie’ is one of our pillars. We’re just resilient,” Floyd said. “When this team was down last year against Thompson twice and we were down to Saraland twice, our kids just don’t think they can be beat.”
Clay Chalkville gained 286 yards of total offense, 230 rushing and 36 passing, while giving up 298 yards to Thompson – over 150 of those yards in the 4th quarter.
With the win, Clay-Chalkville improves to 5-0 overall and will host Mountain Brook in 6A, Region 6 action next Friday.
