The Reset: Huskies baseball wins area

Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.


BASEBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team clinched a playoff berth last Tuesday with a 9-1 win over Spain Park in the first game of the final area series. Riley Quick got the win on the mound, striking out 10 batters. Kurt Kizer led the Huskies offense by picking up 2 hits, including a double, and 3 runs batted in. Ethan Duhon knocked in a couple runs on his double, while Jack Ollis knocked in a run as well. Jackson Kendrick scored 2 runs for Hewitt. For Spain Park, Evan Smallwood drove in the lone run, while Jacob Tobias added a double to his ledger. Jake Majors pitched well in his start, going 4 1/3 innings and allowing a run on a hit with 3 strikeouts. 

Hewitt-Trussville fell to Spain Park 6-4 in the final game of the regular season, but the Huskies still captured the Area 6 title. 

This week, the Huskies host Hoover in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs. A Friday doubleheader is set for a 4:30 p.m. start, with an if-necessary game set for 1 p.m. Saturday.

Pinson Valley capped off the season with a pair of wins last week. On Tuesday, the Indians beat Ramsay 7-6. They rallied to score four runs over the final two innings, with Isaiah Sims’ run-scoring hit the walk-off winner. Sims drove in a pair of runs in the game, as did Jamison Green. Chris Calma registered 3 hits from the leadoff spot. 

The Indians beat Wenonah 23-0 on Thursday to finish things off. Calma hit a home run and led the team with 5 RBIs. DeVante’ Wells, Taborie Reed and Caden Hamby all knocked in 3 runs each as well. Noah Bufford threw 4 innings, allowing only 1 hit.


SOFTBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville softball team took down Helena 9-1 last Tuesday. Sara Phillips and Olivia Faggard each went deep for the Huskies, with Phillips hitting a solo homer and Faggard knocking in 4 runs in the game. Phillips got the start in the circle and was nearly dominant, allowing only an unearned run on 5 hits with 11 strikeouts. Maddie Wallace, Emily Onofry, Olivia Stults and Rubie Simon each tallied an RBI for Hewitt and Riley Tyree was 3-for-4 on the day. 

Clay-Chalkville blew past Huffman 16-1 on Tuesday. Zyian Dunning hit a home run, knocking in 3 runs in the game. Skylar Swain and Anna Campbell each drove in a pair as well. Ariel McClee, LaDonna Scott, Leah Davenport and Crystal Moss all tallied RBIs of their own. McClee pitched well in the circle, allowing the lone run but no hits, with 6 strikeouts. 

Hewitt-Trussville notched the regular season area championship with a 2-1 win over Spain Park on Wednesday. The Huskies got both of their runs in the fifth inning, as Phillips homered and Kenleigh Cahalan hit a run-scoring double. Sarah Hindman was strong in the circle, allowing the lone run on 7 hits in the complete game effort. For Spain Park, Morgan Jolley was 2-for-3 and drove in the Jags’ run. Katherine Brown put forth a strong effort in the circle, going 6 innings and allowing 2 runs on 6 hits.  

Clay-Chalkville fell to Ramsay 9-4 on Wednesday. Scott went 2-for-4 with a double and 3 RBIs to lead the way for the Cougars, with Dunning knocking in the other run. Campbell pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing 4 runs (3 earned).

Pinson Valley beat Shades Valley 6-4 on Wednesday. Maleah Pliscofsky and Caitlin Buford each tallied 2 hits and drove in a run. Madison Newsome pitched well, going the complete 7 innings and allowing 4 runs.

Clay-Chalkville took down Shades Valley 9-8 on Thursday, as Azzie Parker’s walk-off hit in the eighth inning lifted the Cougars to the win. The Cougars stacked up 16 hits in the contest, with Scott notching 4 of them, and Dunning and Swain each adding 3 hits. 

The Cougars defeated Locust Fork 12-7 on Friday evening. McClee had 2 hits and 2 RBIs to lead the way for the team.

Pinson Valley fell to Gardendale 13-0 on Thursday in the final area game before losing to Dora 9-6 on Friday. In the Dora game, Anna Sullivan went 4-for-4 and knocked in a run. 

Hewitt-Trussville played in the Hoover Classic on Friday, winning three games. The Huskies beat Gardendale 12-5, blew past Foley 13-0 and beat DuPont Manual 11-1. In the Gardendale win, the offensive effort was a balanced one. Nine players knocked in runs in the contest, with Cahalan driving in a pair of runs to lead the way. In the Foley win, Faggard and Cahalan hit homers, combining to drive in 6 runs between them. Olivia Stults had 3 RBIs in a multi-hit game and Tyree knocked in a pair as well. Faggard also threw a 1-hit shutout over 4 innings of work. In the third game, Faggard homered once again and drove in 3 runs in the contest. Riley Rudick had a big game as well, with 2 hits and 2 RBIs. Hindman threw 5 innings, allowing just a run on 2 hits.

Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley finish out regular season play this week before area tournament action. 


SOCCER

Last Tuesday, the Hewitt-Trussville soccer teams suffered tough defeats to Spain Park, the boys losing 3-0 and the girls falling 2-0. Pinson Valley’s boys also beat Clay-Chalkville 4-0. 

The Hewitt boys lost to Oak Mountain 2-0 on Friday. Hewitt’s girls finished in a scoreless draw against Homewood on Thursday.

Pinson’s boys lost to Pelham 2-0 on Friday.


GOLF

The Hewitt-Trussville girls golf team won the Bert McGriff Memorial Tournament last week, beating Hartselle by 37 strokes. All four Hewitt golfers shot rounds of 77 or better on the second day of the event. Molly Davidson shot a 5-under par round of 67 to lead the way. Kiersten Riggins shot 75, Gracie Davidson shot 76 and Aubrey Payne scored a 77.

Hewitt-Trussville’s boys closed out the regular season winning the White Plains Invitational on Wednesday. Gavin Isbell led the way for the Huskies by shooting a round of 75. Stuart Dickson shot 77, while Clayton Healy and Taylor Jones shot 79. 


TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville outdoor track and field team hosted the Hewitt-Trussville Invitational last Friday, with the boys and girls teams winning the team competitions. 

Hewitt-Trussville won 10 individual events. James Hammonds won the 100-meter dash in 11.05 seconds, Tori Mack won the 100-meter hurdles (14.75 seconds) and 300 hurdles (45.58), Maci Mills won the 800 in 2:17, Tanveer Raza won the discus with a throw of 147 feet, 2 inches and the shot put with a throw off 55 feet, Madisyn Hawkins won the discus in 113-5 and the shot put with a throw of 36-8 and Jaggerd Moore won the high jump with a clearance of 6-6 and the triple jump by reaching 44-2.25.

Brianna Beckham was second in the 100 and the 200, Avery Cahoon was third in the 800 and the 1,600, Sophia Knox was second in the 3,200, Weston Lovelady was third in the 200, Tristan Teer finished second in the 1,600 and third in the 3,200, the boys 4x100 relay team was second, Hammonds and Moore finished second and third in the long jump and DJ Carter was second in discus.
