The Reset: Basketball teams compete in pre-Christmas events

Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.


BASKETBALL

The local basketball teams were back in action last week ahead of the Christmas break. 

The Hewitt-Trussville girls and Pinson Valley boys played in Battle 205, an event at Bill Harris Arena in Birmingham pitting city teams against teams from the metro area. On Monday morning, Hewitt-Trussville dominated Parker 63-39. D’yona Jones led the Lady Huskies with 20 points and 12 rebounds in the game, posting a double-double.

Pinson Valley also earned a win, knocking off Hueytown 45-37. Terry Coner filled up the stat sheet, going for 22 points, 4 steals, 3 rebounds and 2 assists in the contest. Cameron White posted 13 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. BJ Diakite added 10 rebounds and 3 steals. 

Hewitt-Trussville’s boys played in the Beech Holiday Classic in Tennessee, beginning play with an 82-52 loss to Beech on Monday night.

Clay-Chalkville’s girls hosted the Charles Webster Invitational last week. On Monday, the Lady Cougars posted a dominant 53-30 victory over Sylacauga. Kameron Sanders scored 17 points to lead the team, with Aniyah Crenshaw adding 9 points. 

The Clay-Chalkville boys were on the court Monday, knocking off Central-Tuscaloosa 56-26 in the Wallace State Christmas Classic. Cedric Dixon scored 13 points and Devon McKinnon added 11 points. 

On Tuesday, Hewitt-Trussville’s girls took care of Carver-Birmingham 61-13 in the Battle 205. Later that evening, Pinson Valley fell to Wenonah 62-60 in a tight contest. Coner went for 19 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals to lead the Indians. Caleb White finished with 14 points, 4 steals and 3 assists, while Cameron White had 10 points and a pair of assists. 

Clay’s girls picked up a 39-21 win over Briarwood to advance to the final of the Charles Webster Invitational. Sanders and Kamoriah Gaines each posted 10 points to lead the Lady Cougars, with Tyra Bynum posting 8 points. 

Hewitt-Trussville also added a 67-58 win over Whites Creek (Tenn.) on Tuesday afternoon. The Huskies finished their run in the event Wednesday with a 60-49 loss to Brentwood (Tenn.).

Pinson Valley’s boys rebounded Wednesday afternoon to finish the Battle 205 event with a 59-43 win over Carver-Birmingham. Coner notched a double-double with 21 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists. Caleb White had 10 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists, and eighth grader Clyde Walters contributed 5 points and 10 rebounds in a strong effot.


WRESTLING

The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team won the Holiday Havoc event the Huskies hosted Tuesday, piling up 176.5 points to finish first out of the six teams. Deuce Alston, Lucas Reaves, Jack Strange, Hunter Jones and Chris Hawkins all won in their weight class. Bradley Hastings, Alton Lucas, Dalton Zimmerman and Perry Brake each finished second in their weight class.

On Thursday, the Huskies fell to Father Ryan (Tenn.) 52-19.
