The Reset: Busy basketball week

Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.


BASKETBALL

The local basketball teams were back in action last Tuesday evening. Hewitt-Trussville hosted Hoover, with the Buccaneers winning both contests. In the girls game, the Lady Bucs pulled away to a 59-44 win. Hewitt’s D’yona Jones led all scorers with 18 points in the game, with teammate Audre Benson adding 9 points. Reniya Kelly led Hoover with 17 points and 5 steals. The Hoover boys pulled out a narrow 57-53 win over the Huskies. Two Huskies reached double figures, with Karnell Smith going for 12 points and Legion Gaston posting 10 points. Salim London led Hoover with 17 points.

Clay-Chalkville took a trip to Etowah and came away with a split. The girls won by 20, notching a 51-31 victory. Kameron Sanders led the way for the Lady Cougars with 19 points. Kamoriah Gaines added 12 points as well and Tyra Bynum scored 6. Etowah’s boys took down Clay 63-55.

Pinson Valley’s boys started the week with an impressive 70-59 win over Plainview. Terry Coner led the charge for the Indians, going for 21 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Caleb White finished with 17 points and 3 steals, while Cameron White went for 10 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. 

Hewitt-Trussville traveled to Leeds on Thursday evening, coming away with a split. The Lady Huskies dominated to the tune of an 84-21 victory. Benson led the way with 19 points, as teammates Jordan Hunter joined her in double figures with 13 points. Sara Phillips added 11 points as well. The boys team surrendered the lead late and fell 67-62. Ray Rolley, Smith and Tyler Blake each dropped 17 points to lead the Huskies.

Pinson Valley took to the road on Friday, falling to Gadsden City 62-59 in overtime. Caleb White had a huge night, going for 34 points and 4 steals. Terry Coner filled up the stat sheet, finishing with 13 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. BJ Diakite was a force down low, grabbing 12 rebounds and blocking a pair of shots.

Clay-Chalkville traveled to Helena on Friday afternoon and came away with a varsity split. The Lady Cougars used a strong defensive effort to win 39-19. Brooklyn Phillips and Gaines each had 9 points to lead the team, while Ranesha Smiley added 6 points. The boys team suffered a 50-44 loss to the Huskies.

On Saturday, the Pinson Valley boys traveled to Tucker (Ga.) and took a 62-53 loss. Coner led the Indians with 18 points and 5 steals. Caleb White had 14 points and 3 steals and Diakite pulled down 11 rebounds. 

Hewitt-Trussville’s boys also fell to Eufaula, 62-49.


WRESTLING

Over the weekend, the Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team competed in the Jefferson Disaster Invitational in Georgia, placing fifth out of 22 teams.


RECLASSIFICATION
