The Reset: Local hoops teams busy

Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.


BASKETBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville girls basketball team began last week with a 68-33 win over Center Point. Amiya Payne led the way with 22 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks. Amir Brown had a strong game as well, going for 14 points, six boards and three blocked shots. Jordan Hunter posted 13 points, four rebounds and six assists.

Pinson Valley’s boys also played Monday night, traveling to Gadsden City and grinding out a 45-42 win. The Indians trailed for much of the game before Caleb White hit the go-ahead 3-pointer. White finished with 12 points in the game, all coming in the second half. CJ Finch had 10 points and five rebounds. 

On Tuesday, Hewitt-Trussville hosted Pleasant Grove while Clay-Chalkville picked up a sweep of Fultondale on senior night. The Lady Huskies posted a 52-36 victory over the visitors to remain unbeaten on the year. Amiya Payne went for 20 points, five rebounds and three blocks to lead the way. Jordan Hunter nearly eclipsed a double-double, finishing with 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists. April Hooks added eight points, six boards and four assists. The Hewitt boys came up just short in a 55-54 loss to the Spartans.

Clay-Chalkville’s girls earned an encouraging 54-36 win over Fultondale, while the boys ran away in the second half with a 78-46 victory. Isiah Daniel poured in eight 3-pointers to finish with 24 points, with Donovan Shangase posting a double-double of 20 points and 12 assists. Nick Shaffer added 12 points as well.

All three schools were in action on Thursday. Parker swept Pinson Valley, with the Lady Indians falling 68-44 and the boys losing 57-56 in a tight one. For the girls, Bryanna Williams had 25 points and five rebounds, while Lauryn Green finished with eight points and five assists. In the boys game, Moe Calloway led the way with 20 points, six rebounds and three steals. Greedy Williams added 11 points, three assists and two steals.

Clay-Chalkville split with Chelsea, with the girls falling 38-34 in overtime and the boys earning a 50-35 win. For the boys, Daniel had 21 points, while Shangase added 13 points and seven assists. Hewitt’s girls also stayed on the winning track with a 50-34 victory over Mortimer Jordan. Payne posted 14 points and 10 rebounds. Audre Benson added 10 points and Chrischandria James had a big game with six points and 15 rebounds.

Hewitt-Trussville’s teams earned wins on Friday. The Lady Huskies kept it rolling with a 79-68 win over Park Crossing. Payne scored 29 points and added eight rebounds and five blocks. Hooks added 15 points and seven boards, while Hunter went for 14 points and seven assists. The boys scored a 64-36 win over Chelsea as well. Carter Hollis led the way with 17 points, while Ray Rolley added 11 points.

The Huskies kept up their winning ways on Saturday, beating Addison 69-40. Pinson Valley traveled to Huntsville for the Big Red Showcase as well, knocking off McGill-Toolen 65-64 in overtime.


TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville track and field team competed in the Holiday Invitational the Birmingham CrossPlex last Saturday.

Winning events for the Huskies were Maci Mills (400-meter dash), Amelia Brady (3,200), Lea Townsend (shot put), Nathan Knox (3,200) and Jacob Copham (shot put).

Jailah Loving (third in 60 and 60 hurdles), Mills (second in 800), Sophia Knox (second in 1,600), Avery Cahoon (third in 1,600), Kinley Harris (third in 3,200), Bobby Stanbery (third in 400 and second in 60 hurdles), Nathan Knox (second in 800), Mitchell Phillips (second in 1,600) and Andrew Colburn (third in high jump) all found their way to the podium as well.
