The Reset: Huskies win flag state tournament

Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.


FOOTBALL

The local schools brought home from the Super 7 football championships a pair of state titles last week. 

On Wednesday, the Hewitt-Trussville girls flag football team defeated Smiths Station in overtime to secure the inaugural state flag football tournament crown. Click here for a recap of the game.

Clay-Chalkville’s football team finished off a perfect season with a win over Hueytown on Friday in the Class 6A title game. Click here for the story of the game.


BASKETBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville basketball teams traveled to Oak Mountain last Tuesday night and came away with a split. The Lady Huskies posted a 66-40 win over the Lady Eagles, largely behind a dominant performance from Jordan Hunter. The guard put forth a double-double, going for 25 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds. D’yona Jones had a good night as well, with 15 points and 8 boards. Audre Benson scored 9 points, Chrischandria James pulled down 9 rebounds and Sara Phillips picked up 8 steals. 

The Hewitt boys gave the defending Class 7A state champions a strong push, but fell 68-58. Ray Rolley led all scorers in the game with 19 points. Karnell Smith added 16 points as well. Brady Dunn led Oak Mountain with 18 points. 

Clay-Chalkville’s boys got into a defensive struggle with Spain Park on Tuesday but fell just short in a 33-30 loss. Colin Turner from Spain Park led the way with 14 points. 

Pinson Valley beat Parker 58-23 on Friday evening. Caleb White posted 13 points, 5 assists and 5 steals in the game. Cameron White scored 11, while Terry Coner and BJ Diakite each posted 10 points to give the Indians four double-figure scorers. 

Hewitt-Trussville traveled south over the weekend, playing at Opelika on Friday and Auburn on Saturday. The girls pulled away for a 63-35 victory Friday, while the boys suffered a narrow 63-62 loss. Legion Gaston led the Huskies with 19 points in the game, while Rolley added 16.

On Saturday, the Lady Huskies beat Auburn 52-50 and the boys lost 66-58. In the game, Gaston scored 13 points and Smith added 12.


WRESTLING

Over the weekend, the Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team placed fifth in the Gardendale Invitational. Clark Box won in the 106-pound division, Hunter Jones won at 195 and Chris Hawkins earned top honors at 220 to lead the Huskies.
