The Reset: Indians win state, winter sports underway

Here's a look back at the last few weeks of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.


FOOTBALL

The high school football has come to a conclusion, with Hewitt-Trussville advancing to the second round of the Class 7A playoffs, Clay-Chalkville getting to the 6A quarterfinals and Pinson Valley securing a 6A state championship for the third time in four years.

BASKETBALL

Over the last few weeks, the local basketball teams have been busy.

The Hewitt-Trussville basketball teams visited Mortimer Jordan on Nov. 17 to begin their week of action. The Lady Huskies remained perfect on the young season with a 57-42 win. Amiya Payne and Mortimer Jordan’s Sarah Kanady each scored a game-high 19 points. April Hooks added 13 points and Amir Brown scored 10 for the Lady Huskies. The Hewitt boys suffered a 63-55 defeat.

On Nov. 19, Clay-Chalkville’s girls took a 44-34 win against Helena. Makaila Dillard scored 12 points to lead the way, with Amani Dawkins adding 10 points.

That same night, Pinson Valley played its home opener against Woodlawn. The Lady Indians won 50-36, as Yari Sigler led the charge with 18 points, 10 steals and eight rebounds. Bryanna Williams registered 14 points and five rebounds, and Lauryn Green had 10 assists and six steals. 

The boys team earned a hard-fought 75-71 win in overtime. Greedy Williams began his Indians career with a stellar 31 points and five steals. JoJo James tallied 14 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Terry Conner had eight points with a pair of 3-pointers, while Moe Calloway had seven points and five rebounds. Also that night, Hewitt-Trussville’s boys picked up their first win of the year with a 67-56 win over Moody.

Hewitt’s girls picked up a dominant 72-14 win over Wenonah on Nov. 20. Payne had 28 points and notched her 500th career rebound in the process. Hooks contributed 11 points and Londyn Johnson finished with 10 points. 

The Huskies picked up a sweep of Opelika on Nov. 21. The Lady Huskies earned a 58-34 win, led by a dominant performance from Payne, who finished with 23 points, nine rebounds, six steals and four blocks. Hooks had 10 points and three rebounds, Johnson finished with nine points and Jordan Hunter had six points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and five steals. The boys team picked up a 60-54 win as well. 

To begin Thanksgiving week, Pinson Valley hosted Minor. The Lady Indians suffered a 51-29 defeat, though they were led by 14 points from Bryanna Williams. The boys cruised to a 60-36 victory, led by 19 points and 10 rebounds from Calloway. Greedy Williams had 15 points, six assists and three steals. James finished with 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. 

On Nov. 24, Clay-Chalkville’s girls suffered a 45-19 loss to Pell City.

Last Tuesday, Clay-Chalkville was swept by Spain Park. The Lady Cougars fell 72-16, while the boys dropped a 61-44 decision. It was the boys’ first contest of the season, with Isiah Daniel scoring 17 points to lead all scorers in the game. Donovan Shangase scored 14 points as well. 

Also on Tuesday, Hewitt-Trussville split with Oak Mountain. The Lady Huskies dominated to the tune of a 65-27 victory. Payne posted a double-double with 21 points, 11 rebounds and four steals. Hunter had 21 points as well, adding five rebounds, three assists and four steals. Hooks registered eight points and four assists.

On Thursday, Clay-Chalkville’s boys picked up their first win of the year with a 62-44 victory over Helena. Daniel went for 22 points and Shangase added 17 points in the win. Hewitt-Trussville’s boys fell to Mountain Brook 50-36 the same night. 

On Friday, Clay-Chalkville split with Ramsay and Hewitt-Trussville picked up a pair of wins. The Lady Cougars scored an impressive 53-44 win, with Quice Wilson and Tamyia Muse both going for 14 points. The boys lost 56-43 in a game that was tight until the final quarter. Shangase led the Cougars with 16 points, while Daniel added 12.

Hewitt’s girls blew past Priceville 72-44 on Friday. Payne had 29 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Hooks knocked down four 3-pointers and finished with 15 points and boards. Hunter also added 13 points, six rebounds and five assists. The boys secured a dominant 58-28 win over Mortimer Jordan, behind 17 points from Tyler Pickett. Brelyn Turner added nine points, while Ray Rolley and Emeka Anwah each tallied six.


INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville indoor track and field team began its season last Saturday at the Magic City Invitational at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Winning events for the Huskies were Lea Townsend (shot put), Julian Collins (60-meter dash, long jump and triple jump) and Aaron Himes (3,200).

Brianna Beckham (second in 60-meter dash), Maci Mills (third in 800 and 1,600), Sophia Knox (third in 3,200), Himes (third in 800), Tanveer Raza (second in shot put) and Jacob Copham (third in shot put) registered podium finishes as well.
