The Reset: Cross-country excels at state

Here's a look back at the last week in athletics at Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school.


FOOTBALL

The high school football playoffs continued last Friday night. Hewitt-Trussville suffered a 42-16 loss to Thompson, with the Huskies finishing their season at 9-3. Click here for a recap of that game.

Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley both moved on in the Class 6A playoffs. Clay-Chalkville dominated, shutting out Homewood 42-0. Click here for the story of the Cougars’ performance. This week, the Cougars will travel to Mountain Brook for the Class 6A quarterfinals.

Pinson Valley moved past Shades Valley 48-16 in the second round of the playoffs as well. This Friday, the Indians host top-ranked Oxford in the quarterfinals.


CROSS-COUNTRY

The Hewitt-Trussville cross-country team competed in the AHSAA State Cross Country Championship meet at Oakville Indian Mounds Park near Moulton on Saturday. The girls team finished third in Class 7A, marking the highest finish in program history. The boys team finished fourth at state.

BASKETBALL

The Clay-Chalkville girls basketball team began its season last Tuesday, falling 41-26 to Chelsea. Mackenzie Titus led Chelsea with 15 points and Ellen Fleming scored 10 points.

Hewitt-Trussville’s basketball teams traveled to Carver-Birmingham on Tuesday. The Lady Huskies took control and cruised to a 71-51 victory. Amiya Payne was one of three double-digit scorers for Hewitt, leading the way with 29 points, five steals and four assists on the night. April Hooks had 13 points and Audre Benson finished with 10 points to join Payne. Londyn Johnson finished with eight points and six rebounds. The Hewitt boys fell 72-39.

Hewitt-Trussville hosted McAdory on Thursday, earning a split. The Lady Huskies earned a 53-22 win behind 23 points and five assists from Payne. The boys suffered a 57-27 defeat.

The Pinson Valley girls began their season on Saturday, suffering a 59-23 loss to Huffman.

This week, Hewitt-Trussville is at Mortimer Jordan on Tuesday and the boys are at Moody on Thursday. The girls host Wenonah on Friday. Clay-Chalkville visits Helena on Thursday, while the boys begin play in Mountain Brook’s Spartan Turkey Jam tournament on Saturday. Pinson Valley hosts Woodlawn on Thursday.
