Here's a look back at the last week in athletics at Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school.

FOOTBALL

Last week, all three local high school football teams won their first-round playoff games in dominant fashion. Hewitt-Trussville routed James Clemens 55-12, Clay-Chalkville shut out Southside-Gadsden 63-0, and Pinson Valley rolled past Arab 45-0.

This week, Hewitt-Trussville heads to Thompson, Clay-Chalkville travels to Homewood and Pinson Valley heads to Shades Valley in the second round of the playoffs.

CROSS-COUNTRY

The Hewitt-Trussville cross-country teams competed in the Class 7A, Section 3 meet last Thursday at Veterans Park in Hoover, with the boys and girls teams each finishing well enough to advance to the state meet this weekend.

The girls placed second as a team, led by Maci Mills and her fourth-place finish. Amelia Brady, Sophia Knox and Kylee Sisk finished ninth through 11th, with Avery Cahoon (16th) also scoring points for the Lady Huskies.

The boys team finished fourth to advance, beating Spain Park on a tiebreaker. Mitchell Phillips (ninth) led the team, followed by Aaron Himes (12th), Nathan Knox (16th), Tristan Teer (17th) and Sam Lovin (24th). Wil Edwards placed 27th to help the Huskies win the tiebreaker, 12 spots ahead of Spain Park’s sixth runner.

The Hewitt-Trussville girls basketball team won its season opener last Saturday, beating Park Crossing 64-34. Amiya Payne led the way for the Lady Huskies with 27 points and seven rebounds. Jordan Hunter chipped in a double-double, with 15 points and 11 rebounds, and April Hooks finished with 13 points.
