The Reset: Huskies sweep 1st round playoff series

Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.


BASEBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team swept Hoover in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs last Friday night. The Huskies rallied to win the first game 8-6 and won the second game 6-3 to advance to the second round of the playoffs. 

Hoover jumped ahead in the first game with six runs in the fourth inning, but the Huskies chipped away over the next three innings, taking a 7-6 lead in the fifth on Ethan Duhon’s run-scoring hit. Duhon led the Huskies with 2 RBIs in the contest. Brooks McRae went 2-for-3 with a double and 2 runs scored, while Kurt Kizer and Matt Miller tallied 2 hits and an RBI. Jack Ollis and Carson Wideman also drove in a run each. For Hoover, Lucas Steele led the offense by going 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs. Carter Milliron, Clayton Wallace, Conner Prothro and Hess Fridley knocked in runs as well. 

Hewitt-Trussville scored four runs in the third inning to effectively put the game out of reach in the second contest. Baker Green and Wideman each had 2 hits and an RBI, while Kizer, Riley Quick and McRae all knocked in a run. Jacob Francis got the start and threw 5 innings, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits. Steele hit a solo home run for the Bucs, and Tyler Wilson threw all 7 innings. 

Hewitt-Trussville advances to face James Clemens in the second round of the playoffs this week. The Huskies will travel to Madison for the series, which begins with a doubleheader at 5 p.m. Friday. If necessary, a third game will be played Saturday at 1 p.m.


SOFTBALL

The Pinson Valley softball team celebrated senior night last Monday with a 15-0 win over Fultondale. Maleah Pliscofsky led the way offensively by going 3-for-3 with a double and 2 runs batted in. Janay Hill also knocked in a pair of runs. Anna Sullivan hit a double and drove in a run, while Caitlin Buford, Lorren Aycock and KK Smith all knocking in a run each. Tatiana Pace pitched well, allowing only 1 hit over 4 shutout innings, with 7 strikeouts. 

Hewitt-Trussville suffered a 2-1 loss in eight innings to Wetumpka on Tuesday evening. Ashlynn Campbell notched the go-ahead hit in the eighth inning to lift the Indians. Mya Holt went 8 strong innings for the Indians as well, surrendering just an unearned run on 3 hits. Sarah Hindman nearly matched her, also throwing 8 innings for the Huskies and giving up 2 runs on 6 hits, with 6 strikeouts. 

Pinson Valley suffered a 10-4 loss to Hueytown on Tuesday. Sullivan had a big game, going 2-for-3 with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs.

Clay-Chalkville was defeated by St. Clair County 10-1 on Tuesday. Kaidyn Williams tallied 2 hits and drove in the lone run for the Cougars. 

Pinson Valley fell to Pleasant Grove 5-1 on Wednesday. Tatiana Pace pitched well in relief for the Indians, allowing 2 unearned runs on 1 hit over 5 innings. 

Thompson put a damper on Hewitt-Trussville’s senior celebration Thursday, as Thompson knocked off the Huskies 12-0. 

Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley started the Class 6A, Area 12 tournament on Saturday.

In the first round of the tournament, Pinson Valley fell to Mortimer Jordan 11-1 and Clay-Chalkville suffered an 18-0 loss to Gardendale. In the following round, Pinson Valley stormed past Clay-Chalkville 12-1. Madison Newsome led the way for the Indians with a pair of doubles and 3 RBIs in the game. Sullivan knocked in 2 for Pinson as well, while Pliscofsky and Pace drove in a run each as well. Hill pitched well, allowing only a run on 5 hits in 7 innings. 

The loss ended Clay-Chalkville’s season. Pinson Valley continues play in the tournament Monday against Gardendale. 

Hewitt-Trussville hosts the Class 7A, Area 6 tournament Monday-Wednesday.


SOCCER

Last Monday, the Hewitt-Trussville boys soccer team notched a critical 4-0 victory over Spain Park to lock up a playoff berth. The Hewitt girls fell to Spain Park 4-1, ending the Lady Huskies’ season. 

For the boys, it’s their first playoff appearance since 2014 and the first since the formation of Class 7A. In the win, Cason Cook lobbed a corner kick in front of the goal and Cameron Bonner found the back of the net with a header in the 11th minute of the game to open the scoring, as Hewitt held a 1-0 lead at halftime. In the second half, the Huskies scored three times in a five-minute span. Cook scored in the 57th minute, then once again a few minutes later on a penalty kick. Brooks Bilodeau scored in the 62nd minute to put the game at its final margin. 

The Pinson Valley soccer teams earned wins in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs Thursday evening. The boys beat Woodlawn 10-0 and the girls blew past Huffman 15-0. 

Hewitt-Trussville begins its run in the 7A playoffs this week, while Pinson Valley plays in the second round of the 6A postseason. The Hewitt boys head to Oak Mountain on Tuesday at 5 p.m., while Pinson Valley’s girls play Homewood at 5 p.m. Tuesday and the boys face Mountain Brook on Tuesday at 7 p.m.


GOLF

The Hewitt-Trussville boys golf team finished fourth at the Class 7A, Section 3 golf tournament. Gavin Isbell led the team with a round of 71, qualifying for sub-state this week as an individual. Clayton Healy shot an 81, Stuart Dickson fired an 83 and Taylor Jones finished with an 88.

Hewitt-Trussville’s girls finished second in the Section 3 tournament Tuesday at Highland Park. Molly Davidson was the individual low medalist, firing a dazzling round of 68. Gracie Davidson shot an 80, Kiersten Riggins fired an 82 and Aubrey Payne shot 83. 

The sub-state tournament is Tuesday at Timberline Golf Club in Calera.


TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville outdoor track and field team competed in the Class 7A, Section 3 meet at Mountain Brook last weekend.

For the girls, Brianna Beckham won the 100-meter dash in 11.97 seconds. She also won the 200 in 24.92 seconds. Tori Mack took top prize in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 14.74 seconds. Madisyn Hawkins was victorious in discus, with a throw of 107 feet, 1 inch. The 4x800-meter relay team won in 9:47 as well.

Maci Mills finished second in the 800 and the 1,600, Mack finished second in the 300 hurdles, the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams placed third, Catherine Asbury was second in high jump, Audre Benson was second in triple jump and Hawkins finished second in shot put. 

On the boys side, Tristan Teer won the 3,200 with a time of 9:34. Jaggerd Moore also cleared the bar at 6-10 to win the high jump. Tanveer Raza won two events, with a discus toss of 146-0.5 and a shot put throw of 56-8.5.

Weston Lovelady was third in the 100, the 4x100 relay was second, Tremaine Hobbs finished third in the high jump, Moore and James Hammonds were second and third in the long jump, Moore was third in triple jump and DJ Carter placed second in discus.

The state tournament is this weekend in Gulf Shores.
