The Reset: Huskies softball blasts competition

Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.


BASEBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team clinched a playoff spot last Tuesday with a 4-2 win over Spain Park in the first game of a Class 7A, Area 6 series. Riley Quick got the start on the mound for the Huskies, going 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out nine batters. Baker Green earned the win after getting the final out in the sixth and Skylar Jones struck two in a scoreless seventh to notch the save. 

Kurt Kizer hit a two-run double and Matt Miller drove in a run as well. Trey Burrell and Ethan Duhon each scored twice.

Hewitt-Trussville sealed the area championship despite a 4-2 loss to Spain Park on Thursday to conclude area play. Ethan Duhon drove in two runs for the Huskies and Baker Green pitched three scoreless innings.  

Hewitt-Trussville begins the Class 7A playoffs this weekend, as the Huskies host Grissom in a first round series.


SOFTBALL

Last Monday, the Pinson Valley softball team rallied from a huge deficit to top Ragland 17-12. For the Indians, Sasha Hughes and Anna Grace Sullivan hit home runs, as the two combined to drive in five runs. Lauren Hallmark drove in three runs, Mikaela Talton knocked in two and McKenzie Cagle drove one in and scored three times as well.

The Hewitt-Trussville bats exploded for an 18-8 win over Vestavia Hills on Tuesday. Jenna Lord led the way for the Huskies, slugging two grand slams and driving in nine runs in a monster performance. Kenleigh Cahalan, Anyce Harvey, Crystal Maze and Katelyn Murphy all homered for the Huskies as well. 

Clay-Chalkville took down Pinson Valley 16-6 on Wednesday. Destinee Banks scored three runs and drove in one for the Cougars, while Jerica Tyree finished with three RBIs. Akiya Dunning finished with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored. Camberlan Brown racked up three hits and three RBIs as well.

Clay-Chalkville fell to Oneonta 15-11 on Thursday. Julia Petty hit a home run and drove in four runs for the Cougars and struck out nine in four innings in the circle. Zoe Williamson also drove in four runs, Brown finished with three doubles in four hits, LaDonna Scott tallied three hits and three runs and Banks scored three runs. 

Hewitt-Trussville blew past James Clemens 10-0 on Thursday. Maze led the Huskies offense with three hits, including a double and triple, and three RBIs. Madi Mitchell and Cahalan each knocked in two runs, while Harvey tallied three hits and an RBI. Sarah Hindman hurled the shutout, allowing two runs and striking out seven in five scoreless frames.

Hewitt-Trussville played in the Hoover Classic over the weekend, beginning things with three wins on Friday. In a 13-1 win over Eufaula, Cahalan led the offense with a 3-for-3 game, hitting two doubles, a triple and four RBIs. Hannah Dorsett was also 3-for-3, finishing with a triple, RBI and three runs scored as well. Lord tallied two hits and two RBIs as well. Sara Phillips was strong in the circle as well, allowing one run on one hit with six strikeouts. 

The Huskies then got past Hayden 8-2. Lord hit two homers and drove in four runs, while Riley Tyree hit a double and home run and knocked in two runs. Tori Hyde went 4 1/3 innings, surrendering two runs (one earned) on three hits. The Huskies then toppled Spanish Fort 3-2. Phillips pitched great, striking out nine over six innings, with both runs unearned on just one hit. 

Pinson Valley played in the Ragland Invite on Friday, dropping three of the four games it played. The lone Indians win was a 10-5 triumph over Glencoe, in which Sullivan drove in two runs. Sullivan homered in a 5-3 loss to Randolph County. Sullivan homered again in a 6-5 loss to Shelby County, as Annie Trucks picked up three hits and drove in a run as well. They fell to Shelby County again, 11-1, as well. 

Hewitt-Trussville posted two more dominant victories on Saturday. The Huskies began the day with a 10-1 win over Orange Beach. Cahalan hit two homers, one of them a grand slam, and drove in five runs. Harvey homered and knocked in four as well. Rubie Simon tallied two hits and scored three runs, while Hindman allowed a run on two hits in her five innings.

The Huskies then made quick work of Fairhope 17-2 in a battle of two of the state’s best teams. Cahalan hit another blast to cap off a phenomenal week, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Harvey went 3-for-3 as well with another homer, two RBIs and four runs scored. Hindman and Mitchell hit homers, while Lord doubled and drove in four runs. Zaylen Tucker went four innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits. 


SOCCER

Last Tuesday, the Hewitt-Trussville soccer teams were swept by Spain Park in their final area games of the season. The boys fell 2-1 and the girls lost 1-0.

The Hewitt boys wrapped up the regular season with a 2-1 win over Westminster-Oak Mountain on Thursday.

In the first round of the Class 6A playoffs on Thursday, Pinson Valley’s boys beat Woodlawn 10-0, Pinson’s girls fell to Shades Valley 4-2 and Clay-Chalkville’s boys beat Shades Valley 3-0. 

Pinson Valley travels to Mountain Brook this Tuesday in the second round of the playoffs.


TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville track and field team hosted the Class 7A, Section 3 meet over the weekend, with many Huskies athletes qualifying for state.

Winners for the Huskies were Kelsey Martin in the 200-meter dash and long jump, Lea Townsend in shot put, Jaggerd Moore in high jump, Julian Collins in long jump, Tanveer Raza in shot put and discus throw and Will Diggs in javelin throw.

Other podium finishers were Jailah Loving (second in 100), Martin (third in 400 and second in triple jump), Maci Mills (third in 800 and second in 1,600), Sophia Knox (third in 3,200), Tori Mack (third in 100 hurdles), Sydney White (second in 300 hurdles and third in javelin), Erika Myrick (second in discus), Madisyn Hawkins (third in discus), Collins (second in 100 and 200 and third in triple jump), Omari Kelly (third in 200 and third in 400), Nathan Knox (third in 1,600), Bobby Stanbery (third in 300 hurdles) and Jacob Copham (second in shot put and second in discus).
