The Reset: Huskies golf finishes 2nd

Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.


BASEBALL

Last Tuesday, the Clay-Chalkville baseball team began a Class 6A, Area 12 series with a 13-6 win over Pinson Valley. Javen Hunter led the Cougars offense, going 3-for-4 with a double and four runs batted in. He also pitched two innings and only yielded an unearned run. Josh Ervin racked up four hits and drove in two runs as well. Jack Freind tallied two hits, two RBIs and two runs, while Bronson Sneed crossed the plate three times. 

Hewitt-Trussville notched a 9-1 win over Vestavia Hills on Tuesday to begin a critical Class 7A, Area 6 series. Riley Quick threw the complete game for the Huskies, striking out nine hitters along the way. Kurt Kizer hit a two-run double, Jack Ollis drove in two runs and Ethan Duhon, Quick, Jackson Holland Matt Miller all knocked in runs as well. 

Pinson Valley and Clay-Chalkville wrapped up their area series on Thursday. Pinson Valley won the first game 8-1 and Clay won the second game 13-5 in eight innings. In the first game, Hagen Gingras went 2-for-3 with a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored. William Tarpley also drove in three runs and went seven innings, allowing one run on three hits with 10 strikeouts. In the second contest, the Cougars exploded for eight runs in the deciding eighth inning. Braxton Russell drove in two runs and pitched five strong innings on the mound. Ervin knocked in five runs, Kobe Lewis drove in two and Kenny Glover allowed an unearned run in three innings on the mound. Tommie Williams finished with three RBIs for the Indians. 

Hewitt-Trussville fell to Vestavia Hills 6-2 on Thursday, as the two teams split the area series.

Clay-Chalkville took down Huffman 13-3 on Friday. Bronson Sneed knocked in two runs, as did Ervin, who also tallied four hits. Freind pitched a hitless inning and drove in two runs as well. Hunter doubled in two and pitched three innings.

Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley have each been eliminated from playoff contention.


SOFTBALL

Last Monday, the Clay-Chalkville softball team fell to Pelham 15-3. On Tuesday, Pinson Valley fell to Mortimer Jordan 10-1.

Hewitt-Trussville took down Oak Mountain 9-1 on Tuesday in a Class 7A, Area 6 game. Crystal Maze went deep twice to lead the Huskies offense. Katelyn Murphy had a big game as well, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run and two RBIs. Kenleigh Cahalan had a triple among her two hits and drove in two runs as well. Sara Phillips was dominant in the circle, allowing just one hit and striking out eight in seven innings.

On Thursday, Clay-Chalkville lost to Gardendale 15-0 and Pinson Valley fell to Hueytown 14-4. For the Indians, Mikaela Talton went 3-for-3 and scored three runs. 


SOCCER

Both Hewitt-Trussville soccer teams fell to Vestavia Hills in area play on Tuesday evening, the boys falling 3-0 and the girls falling 4-1. Reece Rutland broke a scoreless tie to give the girls a brief lead, before Vestavia scored the final four goals over the last 24 minutes. 

Pinson Valley’s boys wrapped up the area championship on Tuesday with an 11-1 win over Clay-Chalkville. The Indians then beat Pell City 2-1 on Thursday.

Hewitt-Trussville’s boys beat Gadsden City 3-0 on Friday.

The Class 6A playoffs begin this week, with the Pinson Valley boys hosting Woodlawn in the first round at 6 p.m. Thursday.


TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville track and field team hosted the Hewitt-Trussville Invitational last Friday. The Huskies swept the top honors in the boys and girls competitions, winning both by significant margins.

Winning individual events for the Huskies were Kelsey Martin (200-meter dash, long jump and triple jump), Maci Mills (800), Sydney White (300-meter hurdles), Lea Townsend (shot put), Julian Collins (long jump and triple jump), Jacob Copham (discus) and Tanveer Raza (shot put).

Jailah Loving (second in 100), Martin (second in 400), Mills (third in 400), Tori Mack (second in 100 hurdles), White (second in javelin), Haleigh Chambers (third in javelin), Collins (third in 100 and second in 200), Jacob Jones (second in 800), Wil Edwards (third in 800), Nathan Knox (second in 1,600), Bobby Stanbery (third in 300 hurdles), James Hammonds (second in long jump), Jaggerd Moore (second in triple jump), Raza (second in discus), Julian Cox (third in discus), Cade Carruth (second in javelin), Will Diggs (third in javelin) and Copham (second in shot put) all made appearances at the podium.

Hewitt-Trussville will host the Class 7A, Section 3 meet this weekend.


GOLF

The Hewitt-Trussville girls golf team won the Auburn High School Invitational last Monday, winning by a single stroke over Auburn. Molly Davidson was the second-place individual, shooting a 4-under 68 for her round. Gracie Davidson shot an 83 and Kiersten Riggins followed with an 84. 

Hewitt-Trussville’s boys finished second at the Tom Bell Memorial last week. Gavin Isbell finished in the top after firing rounds of 71 and 70 over the two days.
