The Reset: Huskies softball has strong week

Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.


BASEBALL

The Pinson Valley baseball team earned a 6-5 area win over Clay-Chalkville last Tuesday. Devante’ Wells had a big game for the Indians. He tripled and drove in 3 runs, while also pitching 5 2/3 innings. Michael Moses doubled twice, while Jamison Green doubled and drove in a run. Noah Bufford and Caden Hamby also knocked doubles in the contest. Isaiah Sims finished the game out on the mound with 1 1/3 scoreless innings. For Clay, OJ Jones threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings. Javen Hunter led the offense with a pair of RBIs. Josh Ervin and Tyler Griffin each racked up 2 hits and an RBI, with Kenny Glover knocking in a run as well. 

Hewitt-Trussville began an area series with Vestavia Hills on Tuesday, picking up a 5-1 win. Riley Quick threw the complete game for the Huskies, striking out 13 batters and driving in a run at the plate. Matt Miller tallied a pair of hits for Hewitt, while Brooks McRae and Carson Wideman each contributed RBIs. Will Cox drove in the lone run for Vestavia and Jackson Harris hit a double. Caleb Shofner pitched solidly in his start, going 4 2/3 innings and allowing 2 runs on 4 hits.

Vestavia Hills earned a split of the series Thursday, beating Hewitt 4-3. Pierce Hanna knocked in half the runs for the Rebels. Hudson Walburn knocked in a run as well. Cox had a strong game setting the table, tallying 3 hits with a double and 2 runs. Harris scored twice and pitched 2 scoreless innings to seal the win. Aiden Black got the start and went 5 innings, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits. For the Huskies, Kurt Kizer and Jack Ollis knocked in runs.

Pinson Valley and Clay-Chalkville split the series, with Pinson winning the tiebreaker game Thursday. The Cougars won 9-3 in the first game Tuesday and the Indians won 17-9 in the other game. Glover and Hunter each hit home runs and pitched well on the mound for the Cougars in the win. Glover allowed a run in 3 innings in addition to his solo homer. Hunter allowed 2 runs in 4 innings, while driving in 3 runs. Kyle Prince, Ervin, Bronson Sneed, Griffin and PJ Trammell all knocked in runs for Clay as well. For the Indians, Bufford homered, Wells went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Sims knocked a run in. 

In the big Pinson win, Moses racked up 4 RBIs, while Hamby, Green, Sims, Rashaud Toyer and Taborie Reed each tallied 2 RBIs. Toyer pitched 3 scoreless innings and Chris Calma knocked in a run. Glover homered and knocked in 4 for the Cougars, while Ervin, Kevin Hurley and Trammell all had multi-hit games and drove in a run. Jones and Cesar Perez added an RBI to their ledgers as well. 


SOFTBALL

The Pinson Valley softball team suffered a 10-0 loss to Leeds last Monday. 

Hewitt-Trussville blew past Oak Mountain 14-0 on Monday to earn an area win. Kenleigh Cahalan was a force offensively for the Huskies, finishing the night 3-for-4 with a triple, a home runs, 3 runs batted in and 3 runs scored in the game. Sara Phillips hit a homer as well and knocked in 4 runs. Olivia Faggard had a huge game as well, racking up 4 hits and driving in 4 runs. Hannah Dorsett went 2-for-3, scoring 3 runs, Riley Rudick notched 3 hits, Riley Tyree knocked in a couple and Emily Onofry went 2-for-2 with an RBI. 

Hewitt-Trussville earned another area win Tuesday evening, holding off Vestavia Hills 6-4. The Huskies jumped out to a 6-1 lead but had to hang on after the Rebels struck for three runs in the sixth inning. Rudick hit a home run for the Huskies and Cahalan was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs in the game. Faggard doubled and drove home a run, and Ana Henson knocked in a run as well. Kate Hicks got the start and pitched well, going 5 2/3 innings, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits. For Vestavia, Miah Simmons was 3-for-3 with a solo home run. Catherine Cassimus drove in a run on her double off the wall in the sixth. 

Clay-Chalkville suffered an 18-2 loss to Mortimer Jordan on Tuesday. Jerica Tyree knocked in a run for the Cougars. 

Hewitt-Trussville broke out the bats in a big way Wednesday evening, beating Tuscaloosa County 11-0. The Huskies hit four home runs in the game, including Phillips, who hit a homer, drove in 4 runs and pitched the complete game in the circle. She dazzled in the circle, allowing a single hit and striking out 10 batters. Faggard homered and drove in 3, while Rudick and Sarah Hindman each homered and knocked in a pair. 

Pinson Valley suffered a 10-0 area loss to Mortimer Jordan on Thursday. 

Hewitt-Trussville played in the Berry Strong Invitational, hosted by Spanish Fort, over the weekend. The Huskies won both their pool games Friday, beginning with a 7-6 win over Orange Beach. Cahalan hit a double and drove in 3 runs in the game. Faggard and Phillips each hit a double and knocked in a run, with Rudick driving one in as well Phillips pitched well in relief, throwing 2 1/3 innings of hitless ball. The Huskies followed that up with a 5-3 win over Baker. Phillips hit a double and drove in a pair, while throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Henson drove in a pair and Rudick went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Hicks started the game and threw 4 1/3 innings, allowing 3 runs (2 earned).

Hewitt-Trussville finished up its run in the tournament Saturday, beating Mobile Christian 4-1 before falling to Fairhope 7-5 against the top-ranked teams in Class 3A and 7A, respectively. In the win over Mobile Christian, the Huskies needed eight innings to take the win, scoring 3 runs in the eighth to pull away. Faggard and Cahalan each knocked in a pair of runs in the game, while Phillips went the full 8 innings and dominated. She allowed just 3 hits and struck out 16 batters. In the loss to Fairhope, Rudick led the charge by going 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs. Tyree and Faggard knocked in runs as well. Hindman pitched well, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) in 5 innings. 


SOCCER

Last Tuesday, the Pinson Valley boys soccer team knocked off Clay-Chalkville 5-0. Hewitt-Trussville’s teams earned an area sweep over Gadsden City, with the boys winning 4-0 and the girls earning a 5-0 victory. 

Hewitt-Trussville’s boys and girls soccer teams earned wins over Pinson Valley on Wednesday. The Huskies boys pulled out a solid 3-2 victory and the Hewitt girls won 7-0.

Pinson Valley’s boys earned a 5-0 win over Fultondale on Thursday on senior night. Four goals came from seniors and the other one came from a freshman. 


TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville track and field team competed at the Mountain Brook Invitational over the weekend. The boys finished second and the girls finished fourth. 

For the boys, James Hammonds won the 100-meter dash in 11.03 seconds, Jaggerd Moore won the high jump (6 feet, 9 inches) and long jump (21-8.5) and Tanveer Raza won the shot put with a throw of 58-7. Weston Lovelady finished second in the 100 and Raza was third in discus. 

Madisyn Hawkins won the discus with a toss of 110-8 and third in the shot put. Tori Mack was second in the 100-meter hurdles.
