The Reset: Huskies win Oxford Spring Sting

Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.


BASEBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team swept a doubleheader last Monday. The Huskies beat Spring Garden 2-0 before blowing out Minor 11-1. Against Spring Garden, Logan Phillips earned the win, going four innings and striking out four in the start. Skylar Jones got the save with four strikeouts in two innings of work. Offensively, Jackson Holland had a triple and Hudson Boren hit a double. In the Minor game, Riley Quick struck out 13 in five innings of work. Trey Burrell and Dylan Overby each drove in two runs, while Holland and Gavin Ellison knocked in runs as well.

Pinson Valley fell to Gardendale 2-0 on Tuesday in an area contest. William Tarpley pitched well for the Indians despite their offensive struggles. He pitched six innings, allowing two runs on five hits with six strikeouts. 

Clay-Chalkville fell to Mortimer Jordan 7-5 on Tuesday in an area game. Javen Hunter was a strong relief option for the Cougars, allowing just one hit in 2 1/3 scoreless innings. 

Pinson Valley was swept in a doubleheader on Thursday evening. Gardendale won the first game 8-6. Jordan Bays and Hagen Gingras each homered in the game, and Devin Kelly drove in two runs. The Indians fell 11-10 in the second game after jumping out to an 8-0 lead in the first inning. Gingras homered and drove in two runs and scored three times. Chris Calma went 3-for-4 and drove in a run as well. 

Clay-Chalkville was swept by Mortimer Jordan on Thursday, losing 11-1 and 6-0.

Hewitt-Trussville swept a doubleheader on Friday, beating Cherokee County 17-7 and knocking off No. 1 Auburn 4-3. In the Cherokee County win, Baker Green earned the win, striking out six in four innings of work. Ethan Duhon finished with three hits and scored two runs, while Holland had two hits and two RBIs. Matt Miller led the offense with a double and four RBIs, while Ellison had two hits and two RBIs. In the Auburn win, Jones got the win, going 6 1/3 innings and striking out eight batters. Quick came on for the save and got the last two outs. Kurt Kizer had two hits, including a double. Jack Ollis drove in two runs, while Miller and Duhon each knocked in one as well.


SOFTBALL

The Pinson Valley softball team fell to Hayden 17-2 on Tuesday.

On Thursday, Clay-Chalkville fell to Mortimer Jordan 18-3. Julia Petty homered and drove in two runs for the Cougars. 

Hewitt-Trussville picked up a 5-0 shutout win over Class 7A, Area 6 foe Vestavia Hills on Thursday evening. Hannah Dorsett led the Huskies with two hits and two runs batted in on the night. Kenleigh Cahalan tripled and drove in two as well. Sarah Hindman hurled the shutout, surrendering just four hits and striking out four in the complete game.

Hewitt-Trussville played in the Oxford Spring Sting over the weekend at Choccolocco Park. The Huskies beat Central-Phenix City 4-1, as Crystal Maze drove in two of the Huskies runs. Sara Phillips was sharp in the circle, allowing just an unearned run on two hits in five innings, with eight strikeouts. The Huskies then beat Springville 10-1. Anyce Harvey, Dorsett and Cahalan each finished with two RBIs to back a strong performance by Tori Hyde. She allowed one run on three hits in four innings of work.

Hewitt-Trussville went on to win the tournament on Saturday. The Huskies started the day with an 11-3 win over Pleasant Valley, as Cahalan and Tyree each knocked in three runs and Phillips worked two effective innings in the circle. In a 10-1 win over Cleburne County, Harvey and Tyree each tallied three hits, Harvey hitting a homer and driving in three. Hyde allowed just an unearned run in five innings. The Huskies then beat Hueytown 18-0. Hindman homered and drove in three and allowed just one hit in three scoreless innings. Phillips homered, Harvey drove in four and Cahalan, Jenna Lord and Riley Rudick each drove in two.

In the semifinals, the Huskies took down area foe Vestavia Hills 11-5. Lord knocked in three runs, Harvey and Tyree drove in two each, and Dorsett had three hits, three runs and an RBI. The Huskies won the final 6-5 over Helena on Cahalan’s bases-clearing walk-off double. Harvey also doubled and scored three runs in the contest.


SOCCER

The Hewitt-Trussville soccer teams returned to action last Tuesday. The Hewitt boys earned a 4-2 win over Helena, while the girls toppled Bob Jones 3-1. In the boys game, Seth Hall scored twice, with Parker Briggs and Bailey Harris adding goals as well. Pinson Valley’s boys also beat Hueytown 10-1 on Tuesday.

On Thursday, the Pinson Valley boys pitched a 3-0 shutout against Springville.


TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville track and field showed its prowess last Friday, winning the Fleet Feet Friday Night Lights event in Fayetteville, Georgia. The Huskies boys and girls swept the top honors in the event.

Individual winners for the Huskies included Maci Mills in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs, Julian Collins the 100 and long jump and Jacob Copham in the discus.
