The Reset: Huskies dominate at beach

Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.


BASEBALL

On March 18, the Clay-Chalkville baseball team played a pair of games at Hewitt-Trussville. In the first game of the day, the Cougars beat Fultondale 14-2. In that game, Bronson Sneed, Josh Ervin and Kobe Lewis each drove in two runs, while Javen Hunter led the offense with three RBIs. Braxton Russell was sharp on the mound, going five innings and allowing two unearned runs on four hits, with eight strikeouts. 

In the second game, Hewitt-Trussville beat the Cougars 12-0. Riley Quick threw the shutout for the Huskies, striking out 12 in five innings of work. Matt Miller led the Hewitt offense, piling up three hits with two doubles and four RBIs. Jack Hollis had two hits, with a double and an RBI. Trey Burrell, Jackson Holland and Brooks McRae scored two runs each.

Pinson Valley fell to Shelby County 13-5 the same day. William Tarpley drove in two runs to lead the Indians. On Friday, Pinson fell to Moody 3-2. Isaiah Siims pitched well for the Indians, allowing three runs (two earned) in 6 1/3 innings.

Last week, Hewitt-Trussville played in the Gulf Coast Classic. The Huskies swept two games on Monday, beating Haleyville 11-1 and Boaz 15-0. In the Haleyville win, Skylar Jones did not allow a hit in five innings of work, striking out 10. Holland drove in three runs, Gavin Ellison and Quick drove in two each and Miller knocked in one as well. Against Boaz, Logan Phillips struck out eight and allowed just two hits. Hudson Boren led the offense with three hits and three RBIs. Miller doubled and hit a two-run homer, Ethan Duhon knocked in three and Quick drove in a pair.

The Huskies then beat Stanhope Elmore 9-5 on Tuesday. Baker Green went six innings, striking out to earn the win. Quick hit a grand slam to propel the Huskies’ offense and Miller had a two-run hit as well. 

Last Monday, Clay-Chalkville split a doubleheader, falling to Oak Grove 11-1 and beating Corner 13-12. The same day, Pinson Valley swept a doubleheader over Ramsay, 11-1 and 15-8.


SOFTBALL

On March 18, the Pinson Valley softball team fell to Gardendale 10-7. Leading the way for the Indians’ offense in the game was McKenzie Cagle, who went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and two runs batted in. Anna Grace Sullivan hit a double and drove in two runs as well. 

Hewitt-Trussville took down Oak Mountain 18-2 in an area contest the same evening. Anyce Harvey was the offensive star for the Huskies, as she went 4-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs. Jenna Lord and Rubie Simon each drove in two runs as well. Sara Phillips went the distance in the circle, allowing two runs on two hits with five strikeouts in five innings. 

Last week, the Huskies played in the Gulf Coast Classic and were declared co-champions after the event was shortened due to rain. They won four games on Monday. In a 9-8 win over Wetumpka, Lord went 2-for-3 with a double, home run and four RBIs, while Hannah Dorsett knocked in three runs as well. Lord drove in three more in an 8-2 win over Greene County (Ark.). Madi Mitchell doubled and knocked home two, while Sarah Hindman struck out five in four innings of work. 

Phillips starred in a 3-1 win over Chilton County, striking out 11 and allowing just one run on two hits in six innings of work. The Huskies capped the day with a 15-0 rout of Pleasant Valley. Kenleigh Cahalan homered for the team, while Harvey and Dorsett each drove in two runs. Riley Tyree, Mitchell and Katelyn Murphy all finished with two RBIs and Zaylen Tucker allowed just one hit in 3 1/3 innings.

On Tuesday, Hewitt began the day with a 1-0 win over Pleasant Valley. Hindman threw five shutout innings, striking out six. The Huskies wrapped up the tournament with a 12-6 win over Dale County. Harvey, Dorsett and Lord all finished with three hits and two RBIs, with Tyree driving in two runs as well.

Last Tuesday, Pinson Valley played in three games as part of Ohatchee’s tournament. The Indians fell to Ohatchee 8-4, lost to Saks 8-4 and fell to St. Clair County 8-6.


SOCCER

On March 18, the Hewitt-Trussville soccer teams earned wins. The boys blew past Stanhope Elmore 8-3, while the girls got past Westminster-Oak Mountain 2-0. Seth Hall scored three goals and Parker Briggs had two goals. Landon Surratt, Jacob Crow and Andy Serena all had a goal each. Bailey Harris and Seth Hall had two assists each. Sam Simmons, Eli Johnson, Seth Walker and Parker Briggs all had an assist for the boys. Julie Mezrano scored the lone first half goal off a corner from Taylor Doss. Julia Farris scored in the second half off an assist from Taylor Doss for the Lady Huskies. Pinson Valley’s boys also picked up a 5-4 win over Mortimer Jordan.

On March 19, Hewitt-Trussville’s boys beat Pinson Valley 12-2 in a dominant performance.


TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville track and field team swept the Helena Classic on the Hill on March 18, the boys and girls teams claiming the top honors. 

Winners for the Huskies included Brianna Beckham in the 100-meter dash, Kelsey Martin in the 200 and long jump, Maci Mills in the 400 and 800, Tori Mack in the 100-meter hurdles, Sydney White in the 300 hurdles, Erika Myrick in the discus, Lea Townsend in the shot put, Jacob Jones in the 800, Bobby Stanbery in the 300 hurdles, Jaggerd Moore in the high jump, James Hammonds in the long jump and Tanveer Raza in the discus and shot put.
