The Reset: Spring sports stay busy

Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.


BASEBALL

Last Monday, the Pinson Valley baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a 6-5 win over McAdory. In that seventh inning, Devin Kelly earned the walk-off hit to lift the Indians to the victory. He finished the game with two runs batted. William Tarpley and Davin Wells each drove in a pair of runs as well. Douglas Tews was solid in relief, allowing just a hit and striking out two in two scoreless innings. 

On Tuesday, Hewitt-Trussville knocked off previously unbeaten Mortimer Jordan 13-9. Skylar Jones earned the win on the mound, going the first five innings and striking out 10 batters. Riley Quick was big offensively and on the mound, hitting a grand slam and notching the save. Trey Burrell finished with three hits and scored two runs, Jackson Holland tripled and scored two runs, Matt Miller doubled and drove in three, Jack Ollis had a pair of hits with a double and three runs scored and Brooks McRae had two hits.

Pinson Valley held off Leeds 7-6 on Tuesday, despite the Greenwave scoring all six of its runs in the bottom of the seventh. Tarpley drove in a pair of runs for the Indians to support a strong start from Isaiah Sims. He scattered eight hits and struck out four in six scoreless innings. 

Clay-Chalkville beat Ramsay 12-2 on Tuesday. Kobe Lewis led the offense with two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Kevin Hurley doubled and drove in two runs as well. Josh Ervin got the start on the mound, allowing just one hit and two runs (one earned) with nine strikeouts in five innings.

Hewitt-Trussville took down Springville 8-4 on Thursday. Quick had a big game once again. He threw a complete game on the mound, striking out 13 batters. He also had a two-run hit as well. Ethan Duhon finished the night with three hits and two runs scored. Burrell, Kurt Kizer and McRae all drove in a run as well.

Clay-Chalkville fell to Leeds 9-4 on Thursday. The Cougars split a doubleheader on Saturday, falling to Mountain Brook 12-1 but rebounding to knock off John Carroll 10-8. Javen Hunter hit a home run for the Cougars, while Jack Freind doubled and drove in three runs in the ball game. Lewis drove in two runs and got the win on the mound, going 1 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and a run.

Pinson Valley split a doubleheader with Springville on Saturday. Gingras drove in a pair of runs for the Indians in a 6-4 loss, but the team rebounded to win 3-2 behind strong pitching from Gingras and Sims. They each allowed a lone run and scattered a total of six hits. 

Hewitt-Trussville took both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday, beating Sylacauga 7-1 and getting past Pelham 6-3. In the Sylacauga win, Baker Green earned the win, going six innings and striking out nine. Ollis had two hits and two RBIs, while Burrell and Miller each drove in a run as well. Logan Phillps earned the win over Pelham, with Lawson Wood and Jones offering help in relief as well. Burrell led the offense with two hits — including a double — and two RBIs. Duhon, Holland, Ollis and Green each knocked in a run as well.


SOFTBALL

Last Tuesday, the Hewitt-Trussville softball team took down Hoover 7-1. Kenleigh Cahalan led the offense with a double, a home run and three runs batted in. Anyce Harvey had a huge game, going 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Sarah Hindman was sharp in the circle, allowing one run on five hits in a complete game seven inning effort.

On Wednesday, Clay-Chalkville outlasted Ramsay 14-12 in eight innings. Julia Petty led the way with a home run and two runs batted, while pitching the complete game in the circle. She allowed just three earned runs and struck out 17 batters. LaDonna Scott went 4-for-5 with a home run, Jerica Tyree went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs and Jamyaa Posey had a couple RBIs.

Hewitt-Trussville earned a Class 7A, Area 6 win over Spain Park on Thursday, 2-1. Riley Tyree registered the go-ahead double in the top of the seventh to send the Huskies to the win. Tori Hyde was stellar in the circle, throwing the complete game, allowing one run on seven hits. Jenna Lord homered in the first inning to get Hewitt on the board. 

Pinson Valley played in the White Plains Invitational over the weekend. The Indians lost a couple close games on Friday, with a 4-1 loss to Alexandria and a 3-2 loss to Jacksonville. In the Jacksonville game, McKenzie Cagle pitched well, going 3 2/3 innings and allowing just an unearned run on two hits with four strikeouts. 

Hewitt-Trussville played in the Hoover Round Robin over the weekend. On Friday, the Huskies blew out John Carroll 14-0. Crystal Maze hit a home run and knocked in two runs, while Cahalan, Harvey and Tyree each knocked in two runs as well. Sara Phillips was strong in the circle, allowing just one hit and striking out seven in four shutout innings. 

Hewitt-Trussville finished up play in the event on Saturday. In the Huskies’ first game, they tied with Mortimer Jordan 11-11. Cahalan went deep, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Madi Mitchell also belted a home run, while Harvey went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. In a 15-0 win over Oxford, Maze led the offense with three RBIs, while Lord drove in two. Hindman allowed just two hits in three innings of work.

Pinson Valley ended its tournament run on Saturday with a 4-0 loss to White Plains.


SOCCER

The Hewitt-Trussville and Pinson Valley soccer teams were in action last Tuesday evening. The Hewitt-Trussville teams fell to Vestavia Hills in an area matchup, the girls falling 3-0 and the boys dropping the 6-0 contest. Pinson Valley’s boys finished in a 1-1 draw with Altamont.

Pinson Valley’s boys earned an impressive 4-3 win over Pelham on Thursday, while the Hewitt-Trussville girls beat John Carroll 3-2.


GOLF

Last Monday, the Hewitt-Trussville boys golf team beat Briarwood 154-165. Ethan Hacker led the Huskies with a nine-hole score of 34 (2-under par). Gavin Isbell shot 36 (even), while Taylor Jones and Shaw Helfrich each shot 42 (+6).

Hewitt-Trussville’s girls won the March Madness Invitational at the Hoover Country Club last week. The Huskies won the 36-hole event by 19 shots over McGill-Toolen. Molly Davidson led the way for Hewitt-Trussville with rounds of 72 and 69, with her 141 total score good enough to take home the individual title. Gracie Davidson finished tied for 13th with a 163 total. Kiersten Riggins was 23rd overall with a 171 score.

The Hewitt-Trussville boys golf team finished second out of three teams on Thursday at Vestavia Country Club. Hewitt-Trussville finished at 210 strokes, three behind Vestavia Hills and 10 ahead of Hoover. Stuart Dickson shot a 2-over par to lead the team, while Shaw Helfrich shot 5-over.


TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville outdoor track and field team swept the Homewood Invitational on Saturday, sweeping the boys and girls competitions. Individual winners for the Huskies included Maci Mills in the 800-meter run, Tori Mack in the 100-meter hurdles, Kelsey Martin the long jump and triple jump, Lea Townsend in the shot put, Bobby Stanbery in the 300 hurdles, Jaggerd Moore in the high jump, Jacob Copham in the discus and shot put and Will Diggs in the javelin.
