The Reset: Lady Huskies finish season in championship game

Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.


BASKETBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville girls basketball team fell to Hoover last Wednesday in the Class 7A final. Click here for the recap of the Lady Huskies’ run to the runner-up trophy.


BASEBALL

Last Wednesday, the Clay-Chalkville baseball team earned a hard-fought 9-7 win. Kenny Glover hit a home run and drove in two runs, while Braxton Russell registered two hits and a homer. Kobe Lewis went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs. 

On Thursday, Pinson Valley blew past Cleveland 11-1. Chris Calma and William Tarpley led the offense, as each player hit a home run and drove in three runs. Tarpley also pitched two hitless innings. Micah Lee threw two innings of his own, allowing just one hit. 

Hewitt-Trussville began play in the Perfect Game High School Showdown tournament with a couple games at the Hoover Met Complex on Thursday. The Huskies beat Trinity Christian (Fla.) 9-3 but fell to Russell County 8-3.

On Friday, the Huskies beat Hartselle 4-1. Baker Green was sharp, going the distance and striking out six. He also drove in a run at the plate. Jackson Holland had three hits and scored a run in the contest. Brooks McRae finished with a double among his two hits and had an RBI as well. 

Pinson Valley split a doubleheader on Saturday. The Indians picked up a 6-5 win over Albertville in 10 innings, as Calma earned the go-ahead hit in the decisive 10th. Tarpley had two hits and two RBIs in the game, in addition to pitching the first eight innings on the mound. Hagen Gingras went 4-for-5, with two doubles and an RBI. He also threw the final two innings, striking out four and failing to allow a hit. In the second game, the Indians fell to James Clemens 20-3.

Clay-Chalkville fell to Moody 16-3 and beat Shades Valley 7-5 on Saturday.

Hewitt-Trussville concluded play in the Perfect Game tournament on Saturday with a 6-5 win over Savannah Christian (Ga.). Carson Treglown earned the win on the mound and Benjamin Lamons got the save. Trey Burrell tripled and drove in three runs in the game, while Ethan Duhon finished with two hits and an RBI. Matt Miller finished the day with three hits and an RBI as well.


SOFTBALL

Last Wednesday, the Clay-Chalkville softball team lost to Mountain Brook 14-2. On Thursday, the Cougars fell to Mortimer Jordan 15-0.

The Hewitt-Trussville softball team hosted the Husky Round Robin over the weekend. On Friday, the Huskies split their two games. In the first one, they dominated Haleyville 15-0. Kenleigh Cahalan, Jenna Lord and Crystal Maze hit back-to-back home runs in the game, and Maze hit another homer as well. Hannah Dorsett registered two doubles and drove in three runs as well. Helena beat Hewitt 6-3 in the second game. Cahalan went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs to lead the offense.

On Saturday, the Huskies were dominant in three victories. In an 8-5 win over Hoover, Lord led the offense with three hits, a homer and three RBIs. Riley Tyree knocked in a pair of runs as well. Hewitt then beat Athens 8-2. Lord doubled and hit another homer, while Maze strokes two doubles and finished with three RBIs. Tori Hyde was strong in relief, throwing three scoreless innings.

In the final game of the day, the Huskies blew past Mortimer Jordan 12-4. Anyce Harvey belted three hits, including a homer, and drove in three runs. Lord doubled twice among her three hits and knocked in four runs. Riley Rudick got in on the action as well, posting a triple and two RBIs. Hyde pitched well again, allowing one run on five hits in five innings. She struck out four. 


SOCCER

Last Thursday, the Hewitt-Trussville girls soccer team won a 3-2 double-overtime thriller over Spain Park. Jacelyn Davis scored for the Lady Huskies in the first half in a game that was tied 1-1 at the break. Julia Farris scored on a penalty kick in the second half to give Hewitt a 2-1 lead, before Spain Park tied it with under nine minutes to play. Julia Farris scored the game-winner in double overtime off an assist from Kaylee Rivas.

Also on Thursday, Hewitt’s boys fell to Spain Park 3-0 and Pinson Valley’s boys took a 3-0 win against Clay-Chalkville. 


GOLF

The Hewitt-Trussville girls golf team placed second out of 20 teams at last Thursday's Yellow Jacket Invitational at RTJ Silver Lakes. Hewitt’s Molly Davidson fired a round of 68 to win the individual title. Gracie Davidson shot an 83 and Kiersten Riggins shot an 86.
