The Reset: Lady Huskies advance to regional final

Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.


BASKETBALL

Last Wednesday, the Clay-Chalkville girls and Pinson Valley boys traveled to Hartselle for the Class 6A sub-regional round. The Lady Cougars fell 49-35, ending their season, but the Indians knocked off the No. 1 team in 6A by pulling out a 62-59 victory. Greedy Williams led Pinson with 15 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and two steals in a big effort. Caleb White added 13 points on four 3-pointers and secured two rebounds. Jo Jo James finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and five blocks as well.

Clay-Chalkville finished the year with a 13-8 record.

On Friday, the Hewitt-Trussville girls earned a tough 49-42 win over Sparkman in the Class 7A regional semifinal round. Following a dreadful first quarter, the Lady Huskies trailed 18-4, but they rallied back and came away with a win. Amiya Payne scored 16 points to lead the way, while Audre Benson and April Hooks each scored 11 points as well. 

Pinson Valley’s boys were knocked off by Scottsboro 69-67 in overtime, as the Indians’ season came to an end in the Class 6A regional semifinal round. Williams scored 18 points and James had 17 points in the loss.

Clay-Chalkville’s boys kept its magical season going on Saturday night, as the Cougars got past Muscle Shoals 58-40 in the sub-regional round. Donovan Shangase scored 17 points to lead the team, while Skyler Smith scored 12 and Isiah Daniel added 11 points. 

This week, Hewitt-Trussville’s girls will take on Vestavia Hills at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Jacksonville State University in the regional final. Clay-Chalkville’s boys will play at Buckhorn on Monday night in the regional semifinals.


BASEBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team picked up its first win of the season last Wednesday with a 10-0 win over Pelham. In the contest, Riley Quick threw four scoreless innings, surrendering just one hit and striking out six batters to earn the win. Trey Burrell scored three runs, Jackson Holland had a run-scoring hit and scored two runs himself, Jack Ollis drove in two runs and Jackson Cole scored two runs as well. 

Clay-Chalkville started its season on Friday with a 14-1 win over Huffman. Braxton Russell led the offensive outburst for the Cougars, registering a double, triple and five RBIs on the day. Jack Freind had three hits and drove in two runs as well. Kobe Lewis and Bronson Sneed each threw two scoreless innings on the mound.

Pinson Valley began its season last Saturday with an 11-5 win over Etowah. William Tarpley had the big game for the Indians. He drove in three runs at the plate and struck out 11 batters over six innings on the mound. In his outing, he surrendered five unearned runs on four hits.

Hewitt-Trussville earned a pair of wins on Saturday. The Huskies began the day with a 3-1 win over Briarwood. Skyler Jones went the distance on the mound, allowing just three hits and striking out nine. Trey Burrell had a double, Jackson Holland finished with a pair of hits and Jack Ollis and Kurt Kizer each had an RBI.

The Huskies beat Northridge 4-1 in the second game of the day. Baker Green earned the win on the hill by hurling five shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out five. Benjamin Lamons earned the save by going the final two innings as well. Kizer had a big two-run hit, while Ollis drove in another as well.


SOFTBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville softball team opened its season in a big way last Wednesday with a 17-7 win over Mortimer Jordan. Kenleigh Cahalan and Riley Tyree led the offensive outburst, as each hit a pair of home runs on the day. Cahalan knocked in six runs and Tyree drove home five. Anyce Harvey had a standout performance as well, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and two runs batted in. Katelyn Murphy finished with two RBIs as well.

Hewitt-Trussville played in the Sidney Cooper Invitational, hosted by Central-Phenix City, over the weekend. On Friday, the Huskies began the round robin event with a pair of wins. In a 12-0 win over Smiths Staton, Cahalan, Tyree and Jenna Lord all homered, with Cahalan leading the team with five RBIs in the contest. Lord, Tyree and Crystal Maze all had two RBIs. Sarah Hindman pitched well, allowing three hits in five scoreless innings.

Hewitt beat Tallassee 9-4 to wrap up the day. Hannah Dorsett and Tyree each drove in a pair of runs in the contest, and Hindman came on in relief to provide three scoreless innings of work. 

Pinson Valley began its season over the weekend at the Whitney Gallahar Classic, hosted by Ohatchee. The Indians split on Friday, losing to Etowah 6-0 and beating Randolph County 7-2. In the win, Mikaela Talton and McKenzie Cagle each drove in two runs, while Cagle pitched three strong innings in the circle, allowing just one hit.

Hewitt-Trussville wrapped up the weekend on Saturday with three dominating victory. The Huskies began the day with a 17-1 win over Enterprise. Cahalan led the offensive show with two homers and four RBIs. Anyce Harvey hit a grand slam and drove in six runs as well. Madi Mitchell homered and drove in two, while Tyree went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Eighth grader Zaylen Tucker was stellar in the circle, pitching all seven innings and surrendering just one run on five hits.

The Huskies then defeated Wetumpka 12-5. Harvey went deep again, driving home four in this contest. Lord also homered for the second straight day, knocking in three runs as well. Hewitt finished the night with a 16-0 win over Opelika. Lord doubled and knocked home three more, while Maze, Dorsett, Cahalan, Harvey and Meredith Whitt all drove in two runs apiece. Tucker was in the circle once again, giving up just two hits in three scoreless innings.

Pinson Valley played two more games in the Whitney Gallahar Classic on Saturday. The Indians beat Ashville 3-0 behind a dominant performance in the circle from Cagle. She threw a no-hitter over five innings, striking out 11. Cagle pitched well in the next game, but the Indians fell to Etowah 2-1. She gave up five hits and two runs in three innings.


SOCCER

The Pinson Valley boys soccer team beat Leeds 2-1 last Wednesday in the first game of the Metro Tournament.

On Thursday, the Hewitt-Trussville boys fell to Oak Mountain 1-0. Pinson Valley beat Carver-Birmingham 3-1 as well. Zaylen McCray, Jose Cupio and Roberto Hernandez scored the goals for the Indians. 

Hewitt’s boys fell to Mountain Brook 2-0 on Saturday.
