The Reset: Huskies finish 3rd at state wrestling

Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.


BASKETBALL

The high school basketball area tournaments took place last week. Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley’s girls team began the Class 6A, Area 12 tournament on Monday, with Clay-Chalkville earning a 56-29 win. The loss ended the Lady Indians’ season.

On Tuesday, the Hewitt-Trussville girls pulled out a thrilling victory in the opening round of the Class 7A, Area 6 tournament. Amiya Payne scored a bucket with eight seconds remaining to lift the Lady Huskies to a 44-42 win. Payne had a game high 21 points to lead the way and Audre Benson chipped in 11 points. 

The Class 6A, Area 12 boys tournament also began on Tuesday, with Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley earning wins. In the Indians’ 87-42 win over Mortimer Jordan, Caleb White led the way with 22 points. Greedy Williams added 15 points, five steals and four assists, while Jo Jo James had 10 points, five steals and three assists in the contest.

Clay-Chalkville also won convincingly, the Cougars trouncing Gardendale 76-38. For the Cougars, Isiah Daniel led the way with 14 points. Donovan Shangase had 13 points and six assists, while Jonathan Harris finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. 

On Wednesday, Hewitt-Trussville’s boys had their season ended at Vestavia Hills, as the Huskies fell to the Rebels 78-42 in the opening round of the Class 7A, Area 6 tournament.

Clay-Chalkville’s girls gave a strong Mortimer Jordan team all it could handle in the area tournament final on Thursday, the Lady Cougars eventually surrendering a fourth-quarter lead in a 34-31 loss.

Hewitt’s girls finished as the runner-up in the area tournament after a 66-60 loss to Vestavia Hills on Friday. 

Also on Friday, Clay-Chalkville’s boys pulled out a thrilling 53-50 victory over Pinson Valley in the area tournament final. Daniel hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 17 seconds to play and the Cougars held on from there. Daniel led the way with 27 points on the night, while Harris added 12 points.

Hewitt-Trussville's boys finished the year with an 8-19 record, while the Pinson Valley girls went 3-13. In sub-regional action on Tuesday, Clay-Chalkville's girls and Pinson's boys travel to Hartselle, while Clay's boys host Muscle Shoals. Hewitt-Trussville's girls head to Sparkman on Thursday for the regional semifinal.


WRESTLING

The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team completed the season at the Class 7A state tournament over the weekend, as the Huskies finished third with 150 points. Hunter Jones capped off an undefeated 30-0 season in the 195-pound division to win an individual state championship. Logan Reaves finished as the runner-up at 138 pounds, while brother Lucas Reaves was runner-up at 152 pounds. Chris Hawkins also advanced to the semifinals for the Huskies. 


SOCCER

Last Tuesday, the Hewitt-Trussville boys soccer team pulled away with six second-half goals in an 8-0 win over Prattville. Cason Cook and Bailey Harris notched the goals in the first half. In the second half, Teague Edwards scored twice, while Sam Simmons, Andy Serena, Landon Surratt and Parker Green all scored as well. Surratt finished with three assists and Harris and Edwards had a pair of assists. On the same night, Hewitt’s girls tied with Mountain Brook 2-2.

On Friday, the Lady Huskies earned their first win of the season with a 3-1 triumph over Enterprise. Kaylee Rivas scored a goal to open the game’s scoring and eighth grader Jocelyn Davis put Hewitt up 2-0 early. Davis added a long goal later in the game as well. 


BASEBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team began the season last Saturday with a 9-7 loss to Jasper.
