The Reset: Huskies sweep state titles

Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.


BASKETBALL

The Pinson Valley basketball teams finished out the regular season on Monday evening at home against Hueytown. The Lady Indians fell 60-33 but the boys earned a 63-46 victory. In the game, Moe Calloway led the Indians in scoring with 14 points and five rebounds. Jo Jo James had 12 points and eight assists, Greedy Williams finished with 10 points, four assists and three steals, and Isaiah Sims took five charges on the night.

Clay-Chalkville and Hewitt-Trussville were back on the floor on Tuesday. The Cougars swept Shades Valley, with the girls winning 55-33 and the boys earning a strong road victory, 62-57. For the Cougars, Jonathan Harris led the way with 16 points. Isiah Daniel and Skyer Smith each added 13 points and Donovan Shangase posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists.

Hewitt-Trussville’s girls took down Center Point 63-24 and the boys fell to Homewood 52-39.

On Thursday, Clay-Chalkville wrapped up the regular season with a sweep of Jackson-Olin. The Lady Cougars picked up a 51-28 win and the boys dominated in a 62-37 victory. For the boys, Isiah Daniel led the team with 12 points, while Skyler Smith and Donovan Shangase each added 11.

Hewitt-Trussville wrapped up the regular season on Friday with a set of games against Mountain Brook. The Lady Huskies capped it off with a 69-40 victory over the Spartans and the boys fell 85-60.

On the girls side, Hewitt-Trussville finished the regular season with a 25-3 record, Clay-Chalkville went 12-6 and Pinson Valley was 3-13. For the boys, Pinson Valley was 18-3, Clay-Chalkville finished 17-4 and Hewitt-Trussville finished 8-18. All teams will play in the area tournaments this week. 


TRACK AND FIELD

Hewitt-Trussville swept the state indoor track and field championships on Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex, winning the Class 7A boys and girls championships for the first time in program history.

The boys edged out Vestavia Hills by 4.5 points (77.5-73) and the girls won a thrilling competition against Hoover, skating past the Bucs 101-100.5. The wins gave the Huskies the first indoor titles in school history.

SOCCER

The high school soccer season kicked off last week. Over the weekend, Hewitt-Trussville’s boys competed in the Lakeshore Shootout. On Friday, the Huskies fell to Albertville 3-2. On Saturday, the Huskies beat Grissom 2-1 and knocked off Bob Jones 3-1. 

Hewitt’s girls finished in a scoreless tie with Thompson on Friday as well.
