The Reset: Cougars knock off Indians

Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.


BASKETBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville boys basketball team began play last week on Monday with a 79-67 loss. 

Pinson Valley’s boys played on Monday as well, beating Shades Valley 56-53 in overtime as part of Fairfield’s MLK Day Roundball Classic. Jo Jo James led the way for the Indians with 18 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists. Greedy Williams finished with 13 points, four rebounds and three assists. Terry Coner had 10 points and Caleb White hit the go-ahead 3-pointer in the overtime period. 

Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley got back into Class 6A, Area 12 play on Tuesday evening. Clay-Chalkville swept Gardendale, with the girls winning 49-11 and the boys earning a 63-48 triumph. Four Cougars reached double figures in the boys game, with Jonathan Harris leading the way with 17 points. Donovan Shangase and Isiah Daniel each finished with 13 points and Skyler Smith added 10 points.

Pinson Valley split with Mortimer Jordan, with the Lady Indians falling 49-38 and the boys dominating to the tune of an 80-38 win. In the boys game, Caleb White had the top performance, with 22 points, five rebounds and five steals. Moe Calloway added 14 points and Isaiah Sims had a double-double, finishing with 13 points and 10 boards.

Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley squared off on Thursday night, with the Cougars taking victories in both matchups. The Lady Cougars dominated, scoring the first 32 points of the contest and earning a 49-23 win. Cheyenne Pearson led the way with 13 points for Clay, with Tamyia Muse adding 12. Amani Dawkins scored nine as well. 

In the boys game, Clay-Chalkville avenged a previous loss by taking a 59-51 win over the Class 6A No. 2 Indians. Shangase had a big night, dropping 23 points. Daniel finished with 13 points and Jayden Sweeney added 12 for the Cougars. In the Indians’ first area loss in a few years, James had 14 points and six rebounds, while Williams finished with 13 points and four assists.

Hewitt-Trussville returned to Class 7A, Area 6 play on Friday night, but the Huskies were swept by Vestavia Hills. The Lady Huskied suffered a 61-54 loss to Vestavia, while the boys fell 66-54. 


TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville track and field team competed in the Martin Luther King Indoor Track Classic last Monday at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The Huskies had a few individual winners. Kelsey Martin won two events, winning the 400-meter run in 58.28 seconds and the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 10.75 inches. Julian Collins won a pair of events as well, winning the long jump at 24-7.5 and the triple jump at 45-2. 

Maci Mills won the 1,600 with a time of 5:17.32. Lea Townsend kept up her stellar shot put season, winning with a throw of 41-1. Nathan Knox took home top honors in the 1,600 with a time of 4:26.68. Tanveer Raza also won the shot put with a throw of 54-4.75.

Other podium finishers for Hewitt were Avery Cahoon (third in 1,600), Sophia Knox (second in 3,200), Jailah Loving (second in 60 hurdles), Tori Mack (third in 60 hurdles), Martin (third in high jump and second in triple jump), Erika Myrick (third in shot put), Wil Edwards (third in 800), Mitchell Phillps (second in 3,200), Bobby Stanbery (third in 60 hurdles), Jacob Copham (second in shot put) and DJ Carter (third in shot put).


BOWLING

The Hewitt-Trussville boys bowling team qualified for the state tournament, set for later this week, after advancing to the semifinals of the Class 6A-7A North Regional tournament on Thursday at Vestavia Bowl.

The Huskies knocked off Spain Park 1,386-1,245 in the opening round to clinch their state tournament berth. Hewitt held a slight 807-758 edge after the traditional round, with both teams rolling matching 158s in the first Baker game. But the Huskies turned it on over the final two Baker rounds, posting scores of 206 and 215 compared to 165 and 164 for Spain Park.

Sparkman edged out Hewitt-Trussville 1,473-1,399 in the semifinals. The Huskies held a 903-891 lead after the traditional game, but Sparkman rolled a 225 in the first Baker game to Hewitt’s 129. Hewitt posted 189 and 178 over the final two, but Sparkman rolled 163 and 194 to hold on for the win.

The state tournament is set to be played at Oak Mountain Lanes this Friday.


WRESTLING

The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team advanced to the Class 7A duals semifinals. Last Tuesday, the Huskies faced off against Vestavia Hills and fell 50-18.
