The Reset: Lady Huskies win 3, indoor track wins

Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.


BASKETBALL

The local basketball teams resumed play last Tuesday evening. Hewitt-Trussville earned a split in Class 7A, Area 6 action. The Lady Huskies knocked off Spain Park 49-39 to improve to 1-1 in area play. Amiya Payne led the way with 20 points, with Audre Benson scoring 11 and Jordan Hunter adding 10 to join her in double figures. The Huskies boys lost 70-44. They were led by Tyler Pickett, who scored 13 points, and Ray Rolley, who notched 11 points.

Pinson Valley swept Gardendale in Class 6A, Area 12 action. The Lady Indians cruised to their second win of the season, winning 49-19. Yari Sigler led the charge with a double-double, posting 16 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Bry Williams had 19 points to lead all scorers to go along with five steals and five rebounds. Jada Griffen added 10 rebounds and also had four blocks and four points.

The boys team had no trouble with the Rockets either, winning 81-59 to go to 3-0 in area play. Greedy Williams had 18 points, five assists and rebounds to lead the charge. Jo Jo James also had a big night, finishing with 18 points, four steals, four rebounds and three assists. Terry Coner had 11 points, three assists and three steals. Moe Calloway notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Isaiah Sims had nine points and took three charges.

Clay-Chalkville swept Fultondale as well. The Lady Cougars earned a 50-25 win and the boys picked up a 62-46 victory. Four Cougars reached double figures, as Donovan Shangase and Jayden Sweeney each notched 15 points, Jonathan Harris scored 13 and Isiah Daniel added 10.

Area play resumed on Friday night, with all three local schools in action. Hewitt-Trussville traveled to Gadsden City, with the girls earning a 47-32 win and the boys falling narrowly, 56-54. 

Clay-Chalkville also split, with the Lady Cougars falling to Mortimer Jordan while the boys cruised to victory. The Clay girls suffered a narrow 55-49 loss, but were led by Cheyenne Pearson (15 points) and Vonquice Wilson (12 points) in the loss. The boys dominated, winning 59-26. Donovan Shangase led the Cougars with 16 points, while Skylar Smith added 11 points.

Pinson Valley’s boys played a non-area contest on Friday, beating Center Point 75-55. James had a big game, going for 24 points, six steals and four assists. Coner was solid as well, finishing with 12 points, three assists and three steals. Williams had 10 points, six assists and three steals. 

The Hewitt-Trussville girls and Pinson Valley boys played in the JB Bartley Invitational at Huffman on Saturday. Hewitt’s girls outlasted Ramsay 59-50, while Pinson blew past Greenville 73-41. Williams went for 25 points, four assists and three steals to lead the Indians. James had 11 points and five rebounds, Calloway finished with 10 points and six boards and Sims had six points, 11 rebounds and took five charges.


WRESTLING

Last Saturday, the Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team advanced to the semifinals of the Class 7A state duals tournament. The Huskies defeated Huntsville 30-28 to advance, lifted by Chris Hawkins’ victory in the final match of the day. This Tuesday, the Huskies will face Vestavia Hills in the semifinals.


TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville track and field team swept the Hump Day Octameet last Wednesday at the Birmingham CrossPlex, with both the boys and girls teams taking home top honors. 

Among individual winners for the Huskies were Jailah Loving (60-meter dash, 7.99 seconds and 60 hurdles, 9.67), Kelsey Martin (400, 58.18), Maci Mills (800, 2:27.12), Lea Townsend (shot put, 40 feet, 0.75 inches), Armoni Goodwin (60, 6.93), Julian Collins (long jump, 23-6 and triple jump, 45-6) and Jacob Copham (shot put, 50-3). The girls 4x200 relay team won as well. 

Also making it to the podium were Mills (second in 400), Amelia Brady (third in 3,200), Tori Mack (second in 60 hurdles), Erika Myrick (third in shot put), Collins (second in 60), Nathan Knox (second in 3,200), Mitchell Phillips (third in 3,200), Bobby Stanbery (third in 60 hurdles), Andrew Colburn (second in high jump) and Tanveer Raza (second in shot put).
