The Reset: Winter sports rolling in new year

Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.


BASKETBALL

The local basketball teams resumed play last Tuesday. Clay-Chalkville picked up a sweep of Helena, starting with the Lady Cougars’ 47-38 triumph. Tamyia Muse led all scorers with 15 points and Cheyenne Pearson added 13 points. The boys team dominated to the tune of a 69-41 win. The Cougars had three double-digit scorers in the game, led by Donovan Shangase’s 13 points. Jonathan Harris and Isiah Daniel each finished with 11 points.

Pinson Valley’s boys stifled Mortimer Jordan in a 55-23 win. The Indians held the Blue Devils scoreless in the second quarter and never let the offense get on track throughout. Jo Jo James led the Indians with 19 points, eight rebounds, three steals and three assists. Terry Coner added 10 points for the Indians as well. Pinson’s girls fell to Mortimer Jordan 68-28.

Hewitt-Trussville also traveled to Huntsville on Tuesday. The Lady Huskies came away with a 60-34 win, while the boys faltered in a 75-43 loss.

On Thursday, the Clay-Chalkville girls earned a 49-23 win over Pinson Valley in an area contest. Pearson led the Lady Cougars with 10 points, while Yari Singler and Bryanna Williams had six points each for the Lady Indians.

In the boys game, a dominant second half sent Pinson Valley to a 61-39 win. The Indians had four scorers in double digits, with Coner leading the way with 16 points and three steals. James had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Greedy Williams finished with 13 points and eight assists and Moe Calloway had 10 points and 10 boards. Clay was led by Harris, who had 11 points.

Hewitt-Trussville opened up Class 7A, Area 6 play on Friday night, with both Huskies teams falling to Vestavia Hills. The Lady Huskies were unable to hold onto their lead in a 56-53 loss and the boys suffered a 76-66 defeat.

On Saturday, Pinson’s boys earned a 58-54 win over Ramsay, the top-ranked team in Class 5A, after trailing for much of the contest. Williams was the top scorer, finishing with 11 points and seven assists. James had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Caleb White had 10 points and three steals. Coner finished with 10 points and three assists and Calloway had 10 points and six rebunds, giving the Indians five double-figure scorers.


WRESTLING

The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team was back in action last week, winning two of the three matches it took part in. The Huskies began the week with a 51-17 loss to Vestavia Hills on Tuesday, but rebounded to win their final two matches. On Wednesday, the Huskies took down Oak Mountain 42-28 and beat Spain Park 35-26 on Saturday.
