The Reset: Lady Huskies notch big win in area opener

Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.


BASKETBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville boys basketball team began play last week with at Wallace State Community College on Monday, the Huskies suffering a 65-59 loss to Brooks.

Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley returned to action Tuesday evening. The Cougars came away with a sweep of Gardendale. The Lady Cougars pulled away with a 58-20 victory. Kamoriah Gaines scored 17 points, Kam Sanders registered 10 points and Telecia Ransom scored 6. The boys team earned a 66-44 win over the Rockets as well. Jalen Hudson led the way with 13 points, Cedric Dixon Jr. scored 10 points and Devin Finley added 9.

Pinson Valley’s boys posted a 57-25 win over Mortimer Jordan behind the performance of brothers Caleb and Cameron White. Cameron posted 17 points (5-of-8 from 3-point range) with 4 assists and 6 steals, while Caleb had 15 points and 3 assists. TJ Metcalf pulled down 10 rebounds, Riley Sigler added 8 points and Terry Coner contributed 7 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. 

Hewitt-Trussville traveled to Vestavia Hills on Friday evening to open up Class 7A, Area 6 play. The Lady Huskies pulled out a thrilling 49-47 win over the Lady Rebels in a matchup of two of the top teams in the state. D’yona Jones was a too much to handle for Vestavia, posting 27 points and blocking 4 shots in a great performance. April Hooks added 8 points as well. Sarah Gordon led Vestavia with 16 points.

The Hewitt boys suffered a 69-49 loss to the Rebels. Ray Rolley led all scorers with 28 points, while Vestavia’s Win Miller and Reese Gurner scored 17 points each.

Pinson Valley traveled to Clay-Chalkville, with the teams leaving with a split. Clay-Chalkville’s girls dominated to the tune of a 54-18 win. Amani Dawkins and Sanders led the way for the Lady Cougars with 13 points each, while Gaines scored 10 points. 

Pinson got the better end of the boys game, pulling away after a tight first three quarters for a 58-49 victory over the Cougars. Isaiah Sims returned from injury and posted 15 points and 6 rebounds to lead the way. Caleb White had 14 points and 3 assists on the night. Coner had 13 points and 6 steals to join him in double figures scoring. Cam White had 8 points and 3 rebounds, while Raymon McCants finished with 5 points and 3 rebounds. 


WRESTLING

The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team earned a 49-23 win over Spain Park last Tuesday. Winning matches for the Huskies were Clark Box (106 pounds), Bradley Hastings (113), Alton Lucas (120), Thomas Shaffer (138), Logan Reaves (145), Lucas Reaves (152), Luke Golden (170), Hunter Jones (195) and Chris Hawkins (220).

Hewitt-Trussville took down Oak Mountain 56-19 on Thursday evening in region competition. Jones (195), Hawkins (220), Box (106), Dalton Zimmerman (126), Shaffer (138), Logan Reaves (145), Lucas Reaves (152), Andrew Shelton (160), Golden (170) and Cameron Cantwell (182) won for the Huskies.

Hewitt-Trussville defeated Vestavia Hills 34-32 on Saturday afternoon, mounting a rally at the end to win and claim the region title. Hewitt trailed 32-25 with two matches remaining before Zimmerman and Deuce Alston won the final two matches to give Hewitt the win. Shaffer, Logan Reaves, Lucas Reaves, Golden, Jones and Hastings all picked up wins as well.
