The Reset: Local basketball teams wrap up 2021

Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.


BASKETBALL

The local basketball teams competed in post-Christmas events last week. The Hewitt-Trussville girls basketball capped off 2021 with a strong week. The Lady Huskies won three games during the week, including two in the Ball-N Prep National Showcase at Hazel Green.

The Lady Huskies defeated Southwest DeKalb (Ga.) 41-31 on Tuesday and edged Sparkman 45-43 on Wednesday to sweep both games in the prestigious event. 

On Thursday, both Hewitt teams traveled to Tuscaloosa. The Lady Huskies beat the Wildcats 55-20. Audre Benson scored 20 points to lead the way, Jordan Hunter scored 13 and D’yona Jones added 11 points. The Hewitt boys fell 55-35.

The Clay-Chalkville boys played in the Oak Mountain Invite, winning one of their three games in the tournament. The Cougars began the tournament with a 50-44 win over Chilton County on Tuesday. The following day, they fell to Oak Mountain 68-32 and finished with a 53-48 loss to Leeds on Thursday.

Pinson Valley’s boys played in the Champions Classic in Georgia, splitting a pair of games against challenging competition. In the Indians’ first game on Wednesday, they fell to Pebblebrook (Ga.) 82-62. Caleb White dropped 30 points in the game, going 8-of-13 from 3-point range, to go along with 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Terry Coner went for 17 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Austin Coner added 8 points and 3 steals.

The Indians rebounded the following day with a 60-56 win over Kell (Ga.). Terry Coner had a big game, filling up the stat sheet with 27 points, 6 steals, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. White scored 10 points, Austin Coner finished with 8 points, 3 assists and 3 steals and Raymon McCants tallied 7 points and 3 rebounds. 


WRESTLING

The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team traveled to Florida and competed in the Knockout Christmas Classic last week. Hunter Jones finished fourth in the 195-pound division, while Christ Hawkins was sixth at 220 pounds.
