The Reset: Lady Huskies' win streak snapped by top-ranked Hoover

Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.


BASKETBALL

Last week, the Hewitt-Trussville girls basketball team played in the Supreme Courts Christmas Tournament at Guntersville. The Lady Huskies opened play on Monday with a 65-42 win over Susan Moore. In the game, Jordan Hunter led the way with 19 points, five rebounds and five assists. Amiya Payne contributed 12 points and six rebounds. April Hooks had 10 points, seven boards and three assists, while Amir Brown finished with six points and 11 rebounds.

The Lady Huskies remained unbeaten with a 61-44 win over Albertville on Tuesday. Payne had a team-high 23 points, followed by 16 points from Hooks and 11 from Hunter.

Clay-Chalkville’s boys played in the annual Metro Tournament at Homewood last week. On Tuesday, the Cougars fell to Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 48-35. Donovan Shangase led the Cougars with 13 points and Isiah Daniel scored 10 points. 

Pinson Valley’s boys traveled to James Clemens for the BeELITE Holiday Showcase. The Indians beat James Clemens 67-64 on Tuesday evening. Isaiah Sims had 17 points and three assists for the Indians, leading the team along with Jo Jo James, who finished with 17 points, five rebounds and four steals. Greedy Williams added 15 points, three assists and four rebounds.

On Wednesday, the Cougars edged out Woodlawn 50-49. Daniel and Skylar Smith each scored 13 points to lead Clay, while Nick Schaffer added 10 points as well. Pinson Valley suffered a 64-48 loss to Sparkman to finish the BeELITE Holiday Showcase. Williams wrapped up the evening with 20 points, while James had 16 points and seven boards.

The Cougars finished up play in the Metro Tournament on Thursday, stifling Homewood in a 41-23 victory. Shangase led Clay-Chalkville with 12 points, while Schaffer tallied 11 points as well.

In a battle of the state’s top two teams, the Hoover girls outlasted Hewitt-Trussville 60-58 on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Bucs were led by Hubbard, who registered 21 points and scored the game-winning basket on a putback. Kelly added 16 points as well. Payne led the way for Hewitt with 17 points. Audre Benson had 14 points and Hooks added 11.
