Spring sports update: Catching up with Cougars, Huskies, Indians

BASEBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team split a doubleheader with Enterprise on Monday. The Huskies won 14-2 and lost 3-0. Baylor Hancock picked up a win on the mound and Ed Johnson got a save. Across the two games, Zach Defnall and Caden Kirk each drove in three runs, Johnson had two hits and a pair of RBIs, and Carson Skipper and Creed Parker racked up a pair of hits apiece.

The Huskies knocked off Alma Bryant, 7-3, on Friday. Skipper led the way three hits, driving in a run as well. Defnall knocked in two runs and Michael Fowler went the distance on the mound.

Hewitt-Trussville split a pair of games in Auburn on Saturday. The Huskies fell to Sparkman, 3-2, before rallying to notch a 6-5 win over Vestavia Hills. In the win, Parker earned the win on the mound and Johnson got the save. Skipper, Tyler Mauldin, Fowler, Jacob Bishop and Keith Lanum all drove in runs.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville baseball team picked up a convincing 13-4 win over Minor on Monday. The Cougars did the same on Friday, beating Minor 13-5. Connor Miles led the way offensively, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs.

The Cougars were dominant in victory yet again on Thursday, beating Locust Fork 19-0. Miles went 4-for-5 in the game with four RBIs. Ashton Kincaid doubled three times and drove in three runs. Michael Kilgore and Tristan Walton combined for the two-hit shutout on the mound.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley baseball team fell to Pell City, 7-0, on Tuesday. The Indians picked up a 7-2 win over Minor on Thursday and were swept (11-0, 7-3) in a doubleheader by Homewood on Saturday.

SOFTBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville softball team grabbed a convincing 10-1 win over Hoover on Tuesday. Crystal Maze led the Huskies offensively, going 4-for-4 with three doubles and three RBIs. Hannah Borden hit a home run, and Anyce Harvey drove in three runs. Hayden Neugent allowed just an unearned run in the complete game, striking out eight hitters.

The Huskies came away with a 1-0 victory over Moody on Thursday. Tate Moseley’s sacrifice fly in the seventh inning produced the only run in the ball game. Molly Cobb was excellent on the mound, as she hurled the complete game, allowing just three hits in seven innings.

Hewitt-Trussville played in the Oxford Spring Sting over the weekend, and began with a pair of wins on Friday. The Huskies didn’t allow a run over the two games, shutting out White Plains, 7-0, and Daphne, 5-0. Cobb hit a home run and drove in four runs in the first game and drove in two while pitching the shutout in the second game. Neugent pitched five scoreless innings in the first game.

The Huskies got three games on Saturday before bowing out. They won 5-4 over Lincoln to begin the day, as Moseley homered, doubled and drove in four runs. Moseley knocked in three more in a 9-1 win over Jasper, as Cobb surrendered just one hit and an unearned run in the circle. Hewitt-Trussville fell to Vestavia Hills, 9-6, to end its run in the tournament.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley softball team scored in each of the first four innings and took home a 9-5 victory over area foe Clay-Chalkville on Tuesday. Shauna Clevenger notched a pair of doubles and drove in three runs in the game. Graci Graves and Savannah Mayes each knocked in two runs apiece.

The Indians dominated Minor, 15-0, on Thursday. Maddie Pliscofsky went 2-for-2 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored in the game. Ande Findley drove in a pair of runs as well. Kyla Smith did not allow a hit in three innings in the circle.

Pinson Valley played three games in Oneonta’s tournament on Saturday. The Indians began the day with a 5-4 win over Oneonta, as Clevenger and Graves each knocked in a couple runs. Clevenger drove in the team’s lone run in the ensuing 1-0 victory over Coosa Christian, as Ka’Mya Hampton pitched a one-hit shutout over five innings. The Indians’ day ended with a 5-2 loss to Locust Fork.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville softball team fell to area foe Pinson Valley, 9-5, on Tuesday. Calin Adaway drove in a pair of runs for the Cougars. The Cougars fell to Pelham, 8-2, on Thursday. Alyssa Butts drove in the two runs for the Cougars. Alexis Griffin notched a pair of hits as well.

The Cougars competed in Calera’s tournament over the weekend. They fell in both of their pool games on Friday, dropping a 9-1 contest to Thompson and a 7-2 game to Marbury.

They played three games on Saturday and won one of them. The Cougars began the day with an 8-4 loss to Briarwood, as Jewel Mealing notched two hits. Clay-Chalkville picked up a 5-4 victory over Shelby County, as the Cougars scored twice in the fourth inning to take the lead. Julia Petty went the distance in the circle, allowing three hits. The Cougars finished the day with a 7-3 loss to American Christian. Mealing drove in a pair of runs in the loss.

SOCCER

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville boys soccer team was handed an area loss on Monday, as the Huskies fell to Grissom, 1-0. The Hewitt girls fell by the same 1-0 score to Grissom on Tuesday.

The Hewitt boys played in the Smoky Mountain Cup and defeated Cleveland (Tennessee), 3-1, on Friday. On Saturday, the Huskies fell to Ravenwood (Tennessee), 2-1, but rallied to beat Pryor (Oklahoma), 3-0.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley soccer teams lost a pair of games to Leeds on Monday. The boys fell, 2-1, while the girls dropped a 3-0 decision. On Tuesday, the boys fell to McAdory, 7-2.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville boys soccer team fell to Indian Springs, 2-1, on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Cougars fell to Calera, 1-0. Clay-Chalkville’s boys picked up a 2-1 win over Shades Valley on Friday.
