Playing her role

Devin Moseley has an easy way of explaining her role on the UAB softball team.

“Basically, I just help make the coaches’ jobs easier,” she said.

The sophomore team manager does a little bit of everything. During games, she can be found in the press box organizing video clips from the Blazers’ at-bats. She will do anything and everything in preparation for a team practice. On the road, she keeps extra uniforms organized.

“I do whatever they need me to,” Moseley said.

The Trussville native was part of the Hewitt-Trussville High School softball team that made it to the state tournament in 2015. Her younger sister, Tate, is a senior at Hewitt-Trussville this season and has signed to play at Auburn University.

While Moseley decided not to pursue softball in college, she still enjoys being associated with a team. She joined UAB’s program upon entering college last year and joked that it’s a way to avoid real-world responsibilities.

“I like being a part of it, and I think it’s better than going and getting an actual job,” she said with a laugh. “It’s fun to be a part of it and travel and get to hang out with all them and be friends with them. I just enjoy coming out here and doing it.”

Because of her commitment to UAB’s softball program, Moseley has many of the same time constraints as student-athletes. The balance between softball and schoolwork can be tough, but Moseley doesn’t know any other way.

“You just have to get your work done whenever you can,” she said. “I have to do it all the time.”

UAB finished with a 21-33 record in 2017, but the Blazers have grown with Amanda Ellis in her first year as the team’s head coach in 2018. Even though she is heavily involved with the team, Moseley can see the team’s progression from a slightly different viewpoint.

“I do have more of an outside perspective than they do, and even I can see that it’s a huge difference than it was last year. The way they are together and on the field, there’s a big difference. There’s a lot more energy,” Moseley said.

Ellis joined UAB’s program as a volunteer assistant in 2014 and was named the head coach after last season, when Pinson Valley native and longtime UAB coach Marla Townsend was promoted to Senior Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Initiatives and Engagement.

Ellis certainly sees the importance of Moseley’s role within her program.

“Devin is very vital for us,” Ellis said. “She does whatever we ask. She’s definitely perfected video. Realistically, we do need Devin. Devin breaks down video for us so hitters can come in and look at their video.

“Don’t let it fool you, she’s a very important part of this team.”
