Local teams conclude region slate in October

With over half the season already in the rearview mirror, the local high school football teams will wrap up region play in the month of October and position themselves for a hopeful playoff run.

Hewitt-Trussville is saving its open week for the final week of the regular season, so the Huskies will wrap up the regular season in October. They begin the month Oct. 5 at home against Vestavia Hills. The two teams last met in 2015 and marked the first Huskies win in the rivalry. Between 1971 and 2014, Hewitt and Vestavia matched up 12 times, with the Rebels emerging victorious each time.

On Oct. 12, Hewitt-Trussville visits Mountain Brook. The Huskies last played Mountain Brook in 2015, with Hewitt coasting to a 35-14 win. The programs have met 27 times since 1967, with Mountain Brook holding a 17-10 edge in the series.

The Huskies host Tuscaloosa County on Oct. 19. Hewitt-Trussville has only played the Wildcats three times in program history, with the Huskies winning the most recent meeting, 38-14, in 2015.

Hewitt will conclude the regular season in the national spotlight Oct. 26, as the Huskies travel to Thompson in a game broadcast on ESPN2. It will be Hewitt’s second TV game of the season, after opening the season on ESPN in a 34-30 loss to Cedar Grove (Georgia).

Clay-Chalkville will take its bye week the final Friday of September and open the month of October with a home game against Shades Valley. The Cougars have only lost to Shades Valley three times in the 17 meetings between the two schools.

The two last matched up in 2015, with Clay rolling to a 52-14 win.

The Cougars then visit Pell City on Oct. 12. The two teams were last in the same region in 2013, when Clay-Chalkville won 38-7. Pell City has not defeated the Cougars since 2007. On Oct. 19, the Cougars will face Oxford in a rematch from the third round of the playoffs last fall. Clay picked up a 31-15 win in that battle.

Clay-Chalkville wraps up its region slate Oct. 26 by hosting Huffman. Like Pell City, Huffman has not knocked off Clay since 2007.

Pinson Valley plays its final three region games in October as well, beginning with an Oct. 5 home game against Gardendale. Last fall, the Indians knocked off their longtime rival, 55-7, to snap a four-game losing streak in the series. On Oct. 12, the Indians travel to Huffman to play the Vikings for the first time since 2015.

The Indians round out the regular season by hosting Pell City on Oct. 19. The two programs will match up for the first time since 2009, when Pinson Valley took home a 22-4 victory.
