Huskies’ Reaves finishes 2nd at state

The Hewitt-Trussville High School wrestling team tied for eighth place in the Class 7A State Wrestling Championship Feb. 13-15 in Huntsville.

Hewitt-Trussville tied with Smiths Station in eighth with 38 team points. The Huskies were four points from Oak Mountain in seventh.

Sophomore Logan Reaves finished as the runner-up in the 138-pound weight class for the Huskies. Reaves won by decision in the quarterfinals before winning by fall at the 5:03 mark over Smiths Station’s Levi Fouts in the semifinal to make the championship match.

Reaves wound up losing by a 5-1 decision to Gray Ortis of Mountain Brook in the championship match.

The Huskies had two other top-four finishers, with freshman Hunter Jones finishing in third place of the 160-pound division and sophomore Chris Weaver placing fourth in the 113-pound weight class. Jones defeated Chris Congress from Bob Jones by a 7-4 decision to earn third place.

Clay-Chalkville finished in 16th place in 6A with 46 points during the state tournament.

The Cougars Izziah Williams placed in second after being defeated by Michael Dawson from Opelika in the 285-pound weight class final. Williams won in round one by fall, in the quarterfinals by a close decision, and in a tiebreaker in the semifinals to advance to the championship match.

Williams lost by fall at the 3:48 mark in the championship match.

Sophomore Jordyn Johnson placed fifth for the Cougars in the 152-pound division, winning the fifth-place match by decision over Dawson Williams from Fort Payne.

Pinson Valley finished in 24th place in 6A with 26 points during the tournament. The Indians’ only top-four finisher was senior Blake Crocker. He finished in fourth place in the 145-pound division.
