Huskies finish strong at state cross-country meet

The Hewitt-Trussville High School cross-country teams performed well in the fall season’s final event. At the Class 7A state meet Nov. 9 at Oakville Indian Mounds Park in Danville, the Huskies girls finished fourth as a team and the boys were fifth.

In the girls race, Auburn edged Mountain Brook for the 7A title. Both teams scored 41 points, but Auburn’s sixth-place runner finished ahead of Mountain Brook’s. Baker placed third with 124 points and the Lady Huskies earned 148 points. Huntsville won the boys race with 26 points, followed by Vestavia Hills (47 points), Auburn (100) and Mountain Brook (130). Hewitt’s 166 points were good for fifth, just ahead of Hoover (168).

For the Hewitt-Trussville girls, Maci Mills (18th, 19:23), Sophia Knox (32nd, 20:01), Kinley Harris (33rd, 20:04), Kylee Sisk (46th, 20:23) and Mia Cane (50th, 20:29) scored points for the team. Amelia Brady, Olivia Browning, Avery Cahoon, Sophie Bryant and Ellie Kate Jones also ran in the race.

In the boys race, Nathan Knox (25th, 16:30) paced the Huskies, with Aaron Himes (32nd, 16:36), Mitchell Phillips (34th, 16:40), Alex Jones (47th, 16:49) and Sam Lovin (58th, 17:01) also scoring points. Also running in the race were Mac Brooks, Chase Armstrong, Wil Edwards, Kent Glover and Sam Ronsisvalle.

The Huskies now turn their focus to the indoor track and field season, which runs through early February. The state indoor track and field meet is set for Feb. 7-8 at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
