Huskies baseball, softball teams march on

BASEBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team swept James Clemens in a Class 7A quarterfinal series on Friday. In the first game, an 11-6 win, Carson Skipper picked up the win on the mound and contributed two doubles and three RBIs at the plate. Tyler Mauldin notched three hits and drove in a pair of runs. Ed Johnson had two hits, including a triple, an RBI, and three runs scored. Preston Jones contributed a pair of hits.

Michael Fowler hurled a complete game shutout in a 6-0 victory in Game 2. He allowed just three hits in seven innings, while striking out eight hitters. Johnson picked up three more hits and Skipper’s grand slam was the highlight offensively.

Hewitt-Trussville will play at Bob Jones this weekend in the semifinals.

SOFTBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville softball team ran roughshod over the competition to win the Class 7A, Area 7 tournament on Thursday.

They began the tournament on Tuesday with a 16-0 win over Gadsden City. Hayden Neugent retired all 12 batters she faced in four innings and struck out 10 of them in an outstanding performance. Offensively, Molly Cobb finished with five RBIs, as her walk-off grand slam enforced the run rule. Tate Moseley also homered for the Huskies in the game. Kailey Walters picked up a pair of hits and drove in three runs. Crystal Maze and Hannah Borden drove in two runs each.

Later in the day, the Huskies knocked off Huntsville, 8-4. Borden and Moseley each homered and finished with two RBIs. Anyce Harvey, Cobb and Abi Inman had multi-hit performances.

Huntsville won its next game to get back to Hewitt-Trussville in the championship game on Thursday, but the Huskies dominated to win 20-1 in four innings. Borden and Inman had the biggest games for Hewitt-Trussville. Borden was 3-for-4 with a homer, double and four RBIs. Inman went 3-for-4 as well, homering, doubling and driving in five. Cobb had three hits and three RBIs. Harvey and Moseley had a pair of hits and RBIs each, while Walters tripled twice. Neugent allowed just five hits and a run in the circle.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley softball team finished as the runner-up in the Class 6A, Area 12 tournament on Wednesday.

The Indians began the tournament with a 16-7 win over Clay-Chalkville. Graci Graves drove in four runs, while Shauna Clevenger, Ande Findley and Mollie Peoples each knocked in a pair.

Pinson Valley followed that up with a 17-0 loss to Gardendale, but turned around to defeat Clay-Chalkville, 20-9, in an elimination game. In the win, Clevenger led the way with a home run, three hits and five RBIs. Peoples picked up four hits and brought home three runs. Jordan Walker went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Findley had two hits and two RBIs.

The Indians fell to Gardendale, 10-0, in the area tournament championship game. With the result, Pinson Valley qualified for the Class 6A North Central Regional in Tuscaloosa this Thursday and Friday. The tournament is set to be played at Bowers Park.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville softball team saw its season come to an end in the Class 6A, Area 12 tournament on Wednesday. The Cougars fell to Pinson Valley, 16-7, before rallying to defeat Center Point, 18-1. In a second elimination game, the Cougars dropped a 20-9 decision to Pinson Valley.
