HS Sports Update: Basketball teams compete in holiday tournaments

BASKETBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville basketball teams hosted Ramsay on Tuesday evening, earning a split. The Lady Huskies stormed back in the second half to secure a 54-46 win. Hewitt trailed by 10 in the first half but used a 31-4 run to seize the momentum and roll to the win. Amiya Payne led the way with 22 points, 13 of them coming in the second half. Erica Jones scored nine of her 11 points in the second half and April Hook scored six points. The boys team suffered a narrow 58-57 defeat.

The girls went to Eufaula to take part in the Lake City Classic over the weekend. On Friday, the Lady Huskies dominated P.K. Yonge (FL) 63-38. D’yona Jones had 16 points to lead the way, Payne added 14 and Mary Cartee scored 10. The Lady Huskies beat Eufaula 79-78 on Saturday on a last-second shot. Payne scored 28 points to lead the charge and Jones posted a big 26 points as well.

The Hewitt girls are now 11-3 overall, while the boys have a 5-9 record. This week, the girls are in the Ball-N Prep Holiday Invitational in Montgomery and the boys play in the Northwest Florida Shootout.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville basketball teams were in action in tournament play last week. The boys took part in the Shades Valley Choo-Choo Classic. On Thursday, the Cougars fell to Shades Valley 49-46 in overtime, as the Mounties buried a 3-pointer with one second remaining. Jaden Johnson and Isiah Daniel each had 12 points for the Cougars. On Friday, Clay earned a 61-56 win over Carver-Birmingham. Donovan Shangase poured in 18 points and Johnson added 17. The Cougars fell 56-24 to Hillcrest on Saturday.

Clay-Chalkville’s girls played in the Huntsville Hospital Sports Center & TOC Sports Ladies Classic Basketball Tournament at Bob Jones. The Lady Cougars picked up a 62-59 win over Florence on Thursday to begin play. On Friday, they lost to Madison Academy 56-21 but followed that up with a 46-43 win over James Clemens later that day. On Saturday, Clay fell to Mae Jemison 51-38.

The Clay boys are now 8-6 overall, while the girls are 8-7 on the year. This week, the boys are in Plainview’s First State Bank Shootout.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley boys basketball team took part in the Chick-fil-A Birmingham Showcase at the BJCC’s Legacy Arena on Tuesday evening, as the Indians suffered their second loss of the season to Huffman 83-69. GaQuincy McKinstry led the way for the Indians with 29 points and three assists. Kam Woods had 19 points and three assists, while JoJo James finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. 

The Lady Indians played in the Huntsville Hospital Sports Center & TOC Sports Ladies Classic Basketball Tournament at Bob Jones. On Thursday, Pinson fell to Huntsville 61-22 but rebounded on Friday for a 34-31 win over Locust Fork. In that contest, Courtney Whatley led the way with 15 points.

The boys took part in the Joe Horne Christmas Classic in Columbus, Miss., over the weekend. Pinson beat Horn Lake 64-48 on Friday. Woods filled up the stat sheet, going for 24 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals on the night. McKinstry added 17 points, eight boards, two steals and two blocks, and James had 10 points and seven rebounds.

On Saturday, the Indians emerged with a 63-60 overtime victory over Columbus. Woods finished the game with 25 points, five rebounds and four steals. McKinstry went for 16 points, five boards, five assists, and four steals. Cam Scott put up a double-double with 13 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks.

The Pinson Valley boys are now 11-3 overall and the girls are 4-8. This week, the girls host Mountain Brook on Monday and the boys host Ramsay. Over the weekend, the girls are in the Battle in Buckhead tournament in Atlanta and the boys play a couple games in Kentucky.
