HS Sports Update: Huskies do well at Holiday Invitational

BASKETBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville basketball teams were back in action last Tuesday, with both teams falling on the road at Pleasant Grove. The Lady Huskies lost 54-47 and the boys dropped a tight 66-62 contest as well.

Hoover’s girls picked off Hewitt-Trussville 57-39 in a rematch of last year’s Class 7A state championship game on Friday night, as Aniya Hubbard scored 22 points to lead the way for Hoover. 

The boys traveled to Tennessee for the Bartlett Invitational and dropped a 53-30 decision to host Bartlett on Friday night. The Huskies then fell to Memphis Central (TN) 59-52 on Saturday.

Hewitt-Trussville’s girls are now 8-3 overall, while the boys are 5-7 on the season. This week, the girls play at Park Crossing on Monday and both teams host Ramsay on Tuesday and head to Wenonah on Thursday. Over the weekend, the girls will play in the Lake City Classic at Eufaula.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville basketball teams began Class 6A, Area 12 play last Tuesday, with both Cougars teams getting off to a 1-0 start. The Lady Cougars earned a 58-35 win behind 10 points from Vonquice Wilson and nine each from Khali Johnson and Tamyia Muse, and the boys secured a 69-56 triumph. For the boys, Daniel Beachem led the way with 13 points and Khalib Johnson added 10 points. 

Clay-Chalkville split with Helena on Thursday evening. The Lady Cougars earned a tight 43-40 win, with Cheyenne Pearson leading the way with 13 points and Wilson scoring 10 points. The boys team suffered a 55-39 defeat. Isiah Daniel led the Cougars with 13 points and Jaden Johnson added seven points.

Clay-Chalkville capped off a busy week by hosting Chelsea on Friday. The Lady Cougars knocked off Chelsea 46-45, led by a great effort from Wilson, who poured in 27 points. Ellen Fleming scored 12 points to lead the Lady Hornets and Sydney Schwallie added 11. In the boys game, Clay-Chalkville pulled away with a 50-42 victory. Beachem scored 17 points to lead the Cougars, with Daniel and Donovan Shangase joining him in double figures with 16 and 14, respectively.

Clay-Chalkville’s boys are now 7-4 on the season, while the girls are 6-5. This week, the girls play in the Huntsville Hospital Sports Center & TOC Sports Ladies Classic Basketball Tournament and the boys play in the 65th annual Choo-Choo Classic at Shades Valley.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley basketball teams hosted Midfield last Tuesday evening. The Lady Indians fell 51-20 but the boys coasted to an 83-49 win. Kam Woods continued his outstanding start to the season, with 51 points, 10 rebounds and three assists in the game. GaQuincy McKinstry scored 13 points and added five assists and four rebounds. JoJo James had a solid game with eight points, five boards and three assists as well.

Pinson Valley earned a sweep of Parker on Thursday night. The Lady Indians earned their second win in three games, earning a 62-47 victory. Courtney Whatley led the way with 23 points and six rebounds for Pinson Valley, with Demiah Lowery posting 15 points and five rebounds and Shameria Blocton adding 11 points. The boys battled to a 79-70 win over the Thundering Herd. Woods paced all scorers with 44 points to go along with 44 points and five assists. McKinstry added 15 points, five assists and five rebounds, and Cam Scott put up a double-double of 12 points, 18 rebounds and five blocks. 

Pinson Valley participated in the Braggin’ Rights event on Saturday at Huntsville, an event that pits teams from Alabama against teams from Georgia. The Indians fell to Lithonia (GA) 71-68 in overtime. Woods hit a big 3-pointer to send the game to overtime and finished with 26 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. McKinstry added 15 points, four steals and three assists. James had a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards, and Scott had eight points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.

Pinson Valley’s boys are now 9-2 overall, while the girls are 3-7. This week, the girls play at Northridge on Monday and the boys face Huffman on Tuesday at the BJCC’s Legacy Arena as part of the Chick-fil-A Birmingham Showcase. Later in the week, the girls play in the Huntsville Hospital Sports Center & TOC Sports Ladies Classic Basketball Tournament and the boys play a couple games in Columbus, Miss.


BOWLING

The Hewitt-Trussville bowling teams got last week off to a good start last Monday, as the boys defeated Center Point 1,468-920 to improve to 10-1 overall and 6-0 in area competition. Joseph Taylor bowled a 258 to lead the Huskies. Cole McCarty also broke the 200 mark, as he bowled a 235. The girls also beat Center Point 1,033-596. They improved to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in area play. Allison Kerins led the team with a 164.

The boys beat St. Clair County 1,595-988 on Tuesday and defeated Spain Park 1,528-1,337 on Thursday. The girls beat St. Clair County 907-717 but fell to Spain Park 1,239-973.


INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville indoor track and field teams competed in the Holiday Invitational at the Birmingham CrossPlex over the weekend. For the girls, Sophia Knox placed third in the 3,200-meter run, the 4x800-meter relay team placed second and Lea Townsend won the shot put with a throw of 41 feet, 1.75 inches. For the boys, the 4x800 relay team won and Julian Collins won the long jump with a 22-6.
