HS Sports Update: Busy week for basketball teams

BASKETBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville basketball teams began last week with a home set against Huffman on Tuesday. The Lady Huskies cruised to a 63-31 win, while the boys team dropped a 66-53 decision. On Friday, the Lady Huskies took down Huntsville 44-32, while the boys team fell 63-58.

The Hewitt-Trussville girls are now 8-1 and the boys are 5-4 on the season. This week, the Huskies are at Pleasant Grove on Tuesday, the girls are at Hoover on Friday and the boys play in the Bartlett Invitational in Tennessee over the weekend.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville and Spain Park boys basketball teams began play last week on Tuesday, with Clay-Chalkville earning a 42-33 victory in a defensive battle.

On Thursday, the Cougars picked up a sweep of visiting Gardendale. The Lady Cougars pulled away in the second half to take a 53-31 victory. Tamyia Muse led all scorers with 14 points, with Vonquice Wilson adding 12 points. Cheyenne Pearson dropped in nine points as well. Hannah Smith led Gardendale with 12 points, followed by seven from Sarah Beth Brake and five from Preslie Ross. The boys held off the Rockets after they mounted a fourth-quarter rally, but Donovan Shangase’s free throws in the final seconds sealed the outcome. Shangase led the way with 21 points, with Daniel Beachem adding 18 and Cameron Owens scoring 10 points.

The Clay-Chalkville boys are now 5-3 and the girls are 3-5 on the season. This week, the Cougars host Pell City on Tuesday, travel to Helena on Thursday and host Chelsea on Friday.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley basketball teams took a trip to Gadsden City last Tuesday and came away with a split. The Lady Indians fell to the Titans 49-28 but the boys earned an 81-64 win. Kam Woods went off for 51 points on 10-of-15 shooting from 3-point range. He also contributed four steals and four assists. GaQuincy “Kool-Aid” McKinstry made his season debut with 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Cam Scott had seven points, 13 rebounds, six steals and two blocks. Demarques Densmore contributed 10 boards, four assists and four steals as well.

On Thursday night, Pinson Valley visited Parker and came away with a pair of solid victories. The Lady Indians got back in the win column with a 57-44 triumph, led by a dominant performance from Courtney Whatley, who poured in 31 points on the night. Shameria Blocton added 11 points as well. The boys ran away with an 83-55 victory. Woods continued his incredible start to the year, posting 40 points, five rebounds and four assists. JoJo James chipped in 14 points and three steals. McKinstry contributed 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks. Scott had a monster night on the boards, ripping down 20 rebounds along with eight points, two blocks and two steals.

The Pinson Valley boys traveled to Atlanta for the annual Atlanta/Memphis/Alabama Challenge. In the event, the Indians picked off Columbia (GA) 65-57. Woods led all scorers with 36 points, five rebounds and four assists. McKinstry contributed 12 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Scott had a double-double with 10 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks. 

The Pinson Valley boys are now 7-1 and the girls are 2-6 on the season. This week, the Indians host Midfield on Tuesday, the girls host Pelham on Wednesday, both teams host Parker on Thursday, and the boys play Greenforest (GA) on Saturday as part of the Braggin’ Rights event at Huntsville.


INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville indoor track and field teams began their seasons on Saturday at the Magic City Invitational at the Birmingham CrossPlex. For the girls, Brianna Beckham finished fourth in the 400-meter dash, while Maci Mills placed second in the 1,600. Kelsey Martin was fourth in the long jump and second in the triple jump. For the boys, Syed Raza placed fourth in the long jump competition.


WRESTLING

The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team beat Mountain Brook 44-29 last Thursday. Over the weekend, the Huskies fell to Ashland (OH) 57-9.
