HS Sports Update: Indians basketball finishes 2nd at Heritage Classic

FOOTBALL

The Pinson Valley football team lost in the playoffs for the first time in three seasons, as the Indians fell to Oxford 31-28 in the Class 6A semifinals. The Indians finished the year with a 10-3 record, reaching the semifinals for the third consecutive year coming off back-to-back state titles.


BASKETBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville boys basketball team played a pair of games in Plainview last week. On Monday, the Huskies knocked off Hamilton 75-65. Cam Glover led the way with 17 points, with Tyler Pickett and Brandan Copeland both adding 13 points.

On Tuesday, Hewitt-Trussville fell to Plainview 71-59. J’Vahn Durgan led the Huskies with 15 points, while Glover and Copeland each scored 12.

Over the weekend, the Hewitt-Trussville girls traveled to Tennessee to play in the Lady Mustang Thanksgiving Classic at Houston High School. On Friday, the Lady Huskies fell to Houston 64-41, before rebounding to beat Osceola (AR) 64-43 on Saturday.

The Hewitt-Trussville girls are now 6-1 on the year and the boys are 5-2. This week, the Huskies host Huffman on Tuesday. On Friday, Hewitt-Trussville will host Huntsville at Hewitt-Trussville Middle School (formerly the high school) as part of Throwback Night.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville boys basketball team finished play in the Jag Classic last week. On Monday, the Cougars fell to Gardendale 63-50. Isiah Daniel led Clay with 15 points and Jaden Johnson had 12 points.

The Cougars picked up a win on Tuesday, beating Holt 53-40. Johnson and Daniel Beachem each scored 12 points to lead the Cougars, with Scoop Jones scoring 20 for Holt.

The Lady Cougars completed Mountain Brook’s Turkey Jam last week as well. On Monday, they knocked off Shades Valley 50-18, behind 13 points from Aukeivah Tellis and nine points by Ebony Wilson. On Tuesday, Clay-Chalkville fell to unbeaten Homewood 49-41.

The Clay-Chalkville boys are now 3-3 on the year and the girls are 2-5. This week, the boys host Spain Park on Tuesday and both teams host Gardendale on Thursday.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley boys basketball team played in Fairfield’s Heritage Classic last week. On Monday, the Indians began play with a 92-58 win over Jeff Davis. For the game, Kam Woods led the way with 48 points, five assists and three steals. Cam Scott had 17 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks. JoJo James finished with 13 points, six steals and six assists.

The Indians picked up a 77-66 win over Woodlawn on Tuesday. Woods had another big game, going for 36 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. James had 14 points and seven boards, while Moe Calloway finished with 13 points and seven rebounds. Cam Scott filled the stat sheet, getting 10 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, three blocks and three steals.

On Wednesday, Woods’ 3-pointer lifted Pinson to a 67-64 win over Fairfield in the semifinals. Woods finished the game with 36 points, eight rebounds and six assists. James chipped in 18 points, seven boards and two assists, while Scott had six points, 12 rebounds and six blocks.

Later on Wednesday, Pinson Valley turned around and faced Huffman in the final, falling 87-74. Woods scored 27 points to go along with five assists and two steals, James had 24 points, five rebounds and three steals, and Scott went for 11 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks.

The Pinson Valley boys are now 4-1 on the year and the girls are 1-5. This week, the Indians head to Gadsden City on Tuesday and to Parker on Thursday. On Saturday, the boys play Columbia (GA) in Atlanta. 


WRESTLING

The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team had a busy Thanksgiving week. Last Monday, the Huskies fell to Huntsville 40-25 and lost to Oak Mountain 39-33. On Wednesday, they hosted the Hewitt Pools. Hewitt-Trussville finished fourth in the final team standings.
